For a Fairer Ireland and a Better Europe Vote ‘No’ - Adams

category international | eu | news report author Monday September 14, 2009 14:29author by DSF Report this post to the editors

Sinn Féin canvass for No vote in Lisbon Treaty

Speaking during a Sinn Féin canvass in Dublin city centre today Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams yesterday urged voters to reject the Lisbon Treaty '”in order to build a Fairer Ireland and a Better Europe”.

Membersof the party distributed leaflets in Dublin city centre asking people to reflect on why they were being asked to vote again. Responses varied, with most people saying they were going to vote the same way they did last year. However a worrying number of people were confused by the government's campaign on the treaty, and were unclear on the status of the so-called guarantees.

The Government's campaign seems to have confused many voters. But Sinn Féin party president Gerry Adams pointed out that the issue is really very simple.

“Throughout the referendum campaign Sinn Féin has identified article after article of the Lisbon Treaty that will have negative consequences for this member state and our European neighbours. This is exactly the same treaty that citizens rejected last year."

Sinn Féin is not campaigning against the EU however.

“Ireland and Europe can and must do better. Sinn Féin wants Ireland to continue to play a strong and positive role in the future development of the European Union. We seek a new Treaty that promotes real democracy, protects workers’ rights and public services, does not undermine this state’s neutrality and maintains the voice of smaller states, including Ireland, at the Commission and Council tables."

Sinn Féin's posters on the treaty are going up all over Ireland.

“On 2nd October voters have a choice — do they accept a bad deal or do they once again vote for a better deal for Ireland and for Europe? A fairer Ireland and a better Europe are possible. Vote ‘No’ on October 2nd.”

Monarchy? Why can States have the heads of States they choose? Whether a State is a monarchy or not is nothing to do with the EU or the Lisbon Treaty whatsoever. Its a matter for national determination. As for crises communism is no guarantee that there will be no crises. There was a massive food crisis in the Ukraine in the 1930s and in China in the 1960s both directly caused by communism. As for globalization the technology you use to post here and the fact that you can do so are both facets of globalization. The fact that we here can buy FIAT cars and many other things from Italy are also the fruits of globalization. As is the fact that we can travel freely and cheaply to Italy and you can do the same in this direction. Ditto people can move to study and work. These are good things - presumably you agree.

Why do the Irish politicians keep refering to the EU as an outstanding Democracy and in the next breath demand that we relenquish what remains of our bartered and tattered Irish Democracy ...For God's sake we said nooooooo .....when will they show us some respect or have they any idea what constitutes a democracy..

Is there one member of the current Dail who will stand by the people who elected him/her???? and respect our democratic rights,,,
Let them take the time and trouble to read De Valera's prophetic warning about a federal european union...They can read it on page 14 of the paper called 'The Sovereinn Independent'.........www.sovereinindependent.org... Keep up the great work and candles, prayers, karma and all good wishes will be going your way.
