Re-proclaim the Republic

Join with other citizens at the GPO to establish the anniversary of the 1916 Revolution and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic as 'Republic Day' from this year forward.

We are free citizens of an independent republic conceived by both the issuing of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and the revolution of 1916. The anniversary of those events, April 24th, has consistently been sidelined by the Irish State which has abjectly failed to complete the task of building the progressive, modern republic that was promised in the Proclamation. The evidence of this failure lies all around us - one of the most unequal societies in Europe, a shambles of a health system, an education system handed over to the control of religious organisations, the systematic cover up by church and state of rampant child abuse, business and political corruption and collusion on a huge scale at massive cost to ordinary citizens, the handing over of national assets to private multi-national corporations, divisions carefully fostered first between religious denominations and lately between public and private workers, and on, and on.

The French have Bastille Day, the British have Armistice Day, the US has Independence Day. The Irish State has consistently avoided designating the anniversary of the 1916 Revolution and the issuing of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic as a day of rememberance, understanding and celebration of the momentous event... and the heroic people involved in that strike for freedom.

It is time for citizens to reclaim the Republic and to reinvest it with the spirit of paragraph four of the Proclamation. At noon on Saturday April 24th citizens are asked to gather at the GPO to inaugurate Republic Day.

This event is initiated by ordinary citizens, independent of any political party or organisation.

comrade,i agree with your sentiment and would love to see this idea progressed.however i feel that under the present day circumstances and the need to start another revolution that may lead to the removal of this corrupt government and the ecomonic gangsters which it serves my and people like me would be best servents to the political ideals of the men and women of Easter 1916 by attending the protest called by eirigi at the same time on saturday (12pm saturday 24th Apr)on St Stephens Green outside the HQ of Anglo Irish Bank.

why not consider a change of time,or even venue for the year thats in it and join us at the Green.

I will be proud to be at the GPO for the launch of Republic Day, and suggest that it would be appropriate for Eirigi supporters to march from Anglo Irish Bank in Stephen's Green to join us!

Any chance could get some more information on this please - a link to the facebook site that you say has been set up would be a good start. If it's a genuine effort to organise the people behind the concept of a 'Republic Day' why not be a bit more open about it. Thanks

I was in attendance at the GPO. The Rising only began once, on this date and at the GPO. In my view it's entirely appropriate for ordinary citizens to commemorate that event in this way. If others wish to organise other events at other locations under the umbrellas of an assortment of groups or movements then that's fine.

Today's event was organised by ordinary non-party citizens, proud of the women and men who put self-interest to one side for an ideal, an ideal that has been besmirched by lesser women and men who to an extravagant degree put their own interests first.

One thing that was driven home by the speakers was the utter failure of this state to honour the call for equality which was core to the Proclamation. A poem was recited, titled "The Citizen's Army Marched Last Night", leaving nobody in any doubt as to the motivation of the organisers - to point the citizens of this state towards the revolutionary and egalitarian ideals of those active in our society between 1913 and 1916, in the context of the upcoming centenaries of the Great Lock-out Strike and its offspring, The Easter Rising.

Nobody should be in any doubt as to the opportunity these upcoming centenaries provide for a re-birth of the broad left in this country and the rejection of the political sectarianism which has deeply damaged the interests of the left and the ordinary citizens alike in recent decades, a divisiveness which a couple of comments here appear to echo to some degree.

This event was organised between Wednesday and Friday, and I only became aware of it last night. From small seeds great oaks grow, and I will be at the GPO on April 24th 2011, along with a larger crowd, of that I'm sure. I will be doing my utmost between now and then to spread the word for Republic Day, in preparation for the necessary re-awakening of a dormant strain, amongst the ordinary people of Ireland, of rebellion against our masters.

If the left remains divided, with factions targeting each other, we are doomed. Let's turn the fire on our common enemies, the rich and powerful elites who have ripped this society asunder. Connolly found much to admire in Pearse, and vice-versa. I deeply hope that in a year we will have a few hundred people of the left, with a bit of backbone, coming together at the GPO on Republic Day, to commemorate a monumental event and to plan for the struggles ahead, in an atmosphere free from the all-too-familiar internecine squabbling.

We have very big fish to fry.

May you all enjoy the rest of Republic Day.
