SIX COUNTY SPEAKER FOR SEAN
SOUTH LIMERICK COMMEMORATION

The annual Sean Sabhat commemoration will take
place at the Republican Plot in Mount St. Lawrence
cemetery, Mulgrave Street, Limerick on Sunday
2nd January 2011.

The Secretary of the Organising Committee, Joe
Lynch from Beechgrove Avenue, Ballinacurra
Weston in Limerick said today that the oration
will be given by Mick MacManus from County
Fermanagh.

We are pleased that this well-known Republican
figure from the Occupied Six Counties has agreed to
be the main speaker at the Limerick commemoration.

The life and death of Sean South from Garryowen
holds an iconic place in the recent history of Irish
Republicanism and he is a role model for many young
people today.

The Limerick event will be chaired by Des Long, the
author of Awakening the Spirit of Freedom a book on
Sean South published to mark the 50th anniversary of
the famous Brookborough Raid on New Year’s Eve
in 1957 during the IRA’s Operation Harvest.

The public are cordially invited to attend at the
Commemoration. Assemble at Bedford Row in
Limerick city centre at 1.45 pm for parade to
Mount St. Lawrence cemetery.

It is some consolation that Seán South (ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís) is not here to witness the split in the Irish Republican movement - I am sure he would be absolutely devastated to learn that there is not one united strong Irish republican movement around today, but merely a few small groupings of committed Irish republicans who continue on his struggle for complete Irish independence and severance from British imperialist rule (and its establishment here, Stormont, which is infested by British imperialist spies). Not that it takes that many people to make a real difference, but, politically, in the long term little can be achieved (realistically) by several small republican organisations, no matter how determined and committed their members are politically - one strong united Irish republican force is all that Ireland requires today.

Sadly, this year with the arrival of the IMF and the Irish banks relying totally on the mercy of the ECB, Ireland has devastatingly lost its economic independence. Ireland is no longer in control of its own economic destiny (squandered by the so-called ‘Soldiers of Destiny’) - our Nation’s economic sovereignty lies in ruins (it too is in need of a commemoration). Fianna Fáil might as well have ignited a bomb underneath the whole country and blown the whole Irish Nation into smithereens; such is the long lasting economic devastation they have left behind them. Most of the country’s children will be forced to emigrate because Ireland did not have a proper government for years nor anyone capable of or even wanting to regulate or watch over its out of control banks. How devastating can you get, that so many have died for our country’s independence since 1169, only for it to be lost and sold to the highest bidder in 2010.

I am glad Seán South is not around to witness these catastrophic events - please God, may he rest peace (Dia go deo leis).

..but as a 'conservative Roman Catholic' (wiki) I 'm not sure I'd be joining his commemoration. Sounds like just the sort of hero Bertie would have being wearing his Lenten ashes to recall. I'm not into glorifying militarism. Even if it proves necessary(and there are many current justifications) surely we should project it as a last resort. Too much of Irish history is decorated with these misguided 'heros' on their suicidal, if not quite suicide, missions..

I'll stick with Connolly and Mellows. This sort of unthinking militarism usually ends in 'civil' war(luvly oxymoron).

I'm all for rage agin the machine, but lets try to focus on building a future before we go off half-cocked and tear down a situation that bloodshed will only make worse(unless you happen to be a gun-running capitalist).

No offence intended. I am trying to be constructive, but too much of republicanism is poisoned by religious faith that the noble end justifies the brainless means. Connolly tried for a long time to get this across. If he had been heard the 1916 operation might not have given birth to the gombeen republic we inherited. He had the patience, and the record of selfless toil and long study and analysis, and foresaw the probability of yet another fruitless venting of justified spleen, but went along with the nationalist fervour in hope of moving things forward. 1916 was the first abortion of our current gombeen republic, and it was a premature delivery of an unviable creature of british capital interests. The real enemy today is not just westminster and its minions, but Washington and NATO and a globalised kleptocracy of Strangelove fascists flying many and no flags. The war is bigger than Ireland and always was. Again, Connolly's life and work testify to his recognition of this. My worry would be that glorifying such opus dei types you will just use another generation of naive kids to run in some Franco type national redeemer.Bi curamach.

But then pulling triggers was always easier than thinking.Especially when thinking is demoted and upstaged by the 'faith' of our Roman imperator in the vatican.

I am also more of a Connolly fan too.
As he once said "without socialism nothing will change except the accents of the landlords". so true!

However what is wrong with honouring the death of a brave (if misguided) Irishman.
Too many snivelling cowards around these days.

Such bravery is like a fire that thaws out your frozen Irish spirit and inspires you. You don't have to agree with his motivation but you can still appreciate that he was certainly a brave Irish man of conviction to be willing to risk his own death for what he believed in.

I agree that the real challenges that face us are largely a product of the systematic cynical pursuit of profit by the unaccountable faceless products of globalised rapacious capitalism. For example, watch speculation on food commodities by injected US investment money and it's catastrophic effects around the world in 2011 etc etc. This monster is simply out of control and needs to be stopped.

As for the english not being involved in our current struggles. Thats not quite true.

Look at the London "loan" to us and their "exposure" to the Irish banks. They want to help convert this "exposure" to taxpayer liability.
Look at the austerity cuts imposed on NI and the privatisations by the conservative lying government
Look at the corrupt of the London metal market and it's fake paper gold / silver / copper deposits

Fact is, the english financial institutions of the city of London and the millionaire "dream team" conservative government are up to their necks in the current goings on both here and abroad

Also, they still have their grubby fingers in this country through MI5 / MI6 involvement. And there are still quite a few troops walking around here y'know!

And I have no doubt "contributions" to FG / Labour will be made

They may not have a huge army now but Imperialism by "other means" is still happening.

The real players behind all this live on wall street but some of their little cousins and facilitators live in London

Absolutely nothing wrong in the slightest. But why the need for a nationalist qualifier? I am quite prepared to honour a brave Englishman, provided he displays moral and intellectual courage as well as physical courage. I dont deny South had the latter, obviously, and am prepared tp grant him an honest portion of the former, but judging by the religious affilliation I'm not granting him the central guts to question the recieved wisdom of dictated 'faith' from the pernicious vatican, that has perverted and polluted the minds of honest men and women and children by first scarifying the shite out of them with its fire and brimstone from vulnerable infancy to amenable adulthood, and which has a questionable history of collaboration with the imperial british project whenever it suited its devious ends. As I said, recipe for blueshirt Francoist FG republicanism, not too far removed from the pietist bertie republican gombeen preen.

I didn't write that the brits are 'not involved'. Merely that the game has moved on, and republicanism often appears to be still working off a militarist short-sighted analysis that needs to be tempered if we are not going to slide into a 32 county Ulster situation which will be fed(again) by those MIs at 5s and 6s.They are already trying to destabilise what respite has been achieved to desegregate the racist antagonisms up above.

We need to see, as Connolly did and as many British people do, that our peoples are not natural enemies, if we are to straighten out the global shit coming down the tracks with both feet on the gas.

The 'real players' are also Irish.Check out, for example, the preponderance of Irish-American names in the history of the CIAs dirty tricks, from Wild Bill Donovan forward to the current ambassadorial rollcall. We are still our own worst enemies, but some of us in our kristian kindness have become so fond of loving our traditional enemy we have taken our eye of the evolution of the bigger picture. Its handier to simplify it all into the ancient tribal hatered and work up a head of righteous steam with the mates.
Hence my doubts. Physical courage is displayed by grunts and squaddies every day on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.It needs connecting to the moral and cranial dimensions.Otherwise we become the playthings of cynical manipulators, yet again. Just like the innocents defiled by our holy roman hypnotists.
