IRSP: Proposed Visit of Elizabeth Windsor Must Be Opposed

Statement opposing the British monarch's announced visit to Ireland.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

20 March 2011
Irish Republican Socialist Party

Proposed Visit of Elizabeth Windsor Must Be Opposed

Irish Republican Socialist Party Dublin spokesperson Gerry Murray has
called for the Irish people to actively oppose the impending visit of
the British monarch to Ireland in the coming months.

He said: "I have been heartened to see that republicanism has been
galvanised by this announcement. More and more Irish people are
realising that by opposing the visit of Elizabeth Windsor that in
reality they are opposing partition and the occupation of part of our
country by a foreign power. Those who organised this vile visit have
actually given republicanism a huge lift and a focus for their anger
following the destruction of the Irish economy by the corrupt and
greedy."

Mr Murray went on: "As republican socialists we reject outright the
notion of privilege that constitutional monarchy bestows upon a
select few within society. As such we cannot foresee any time in the
future whereby a British monarch would be welcome on Irish sovereign
soil."

Gerry Murray concluded by calling for people to take to the streets:
"The Irish people must oppose this visit by taking to the streets. Set
against the backdrop of severe austerity measures being implemented by
the Labour/Fine Gael coalition this visit will be seen for the vile
spectacle that it is. The Irish people will be expected to accept
measures such as a drop in the minimum wage and the introduction of
water charges whilst the head of the British state will be treated to
pomp and ceremony, banquets and lavishness not before seen on these
shores whilst the poorest in Irish society will be pushed further into
the gutter. Our message is simple, rise up and oppose this visit and
expose it for what it is."

Having to emigrate to Britain in 1960 and being embraced by the people and the system there with open arms I am simply appalled that there are people here opposed to such a visit. It is time to get real and step outside sectarian agendas and realise, as many in this country have, that GB offered hope, when there wasn't much here. I hope the Queen does come and I would be of the opinion that our country's best efforts will be deployed to make the visit memorable.

As someone who went to school in England for 50s and 60s I don't feel any way subordinate to the monarchy, I actually went to an English Republican school, one of whose past pupils was the author Hillier Belloc a well-known English republican. Many members of the British Parliament, the Scottish parliament and Welsh Parliament and the European Parliament are Republicans. We should protest not only for Irish Republicans but for English Republicans many of whom have come to live here in Ireland and are very welcome. I do not feel in any way subordinate to the British monarchy for having earned a living in England been brought up in England by Irish parents, anything they got they work for and it was equally to the benefit of England'.

You are more than welcome to her . Isn't there any way that you could keep the lovely old lady over in Ireland when she comes seeing that you like her so much ? She seems to be very popular with the Irish judging by your newspapers . You could build her a nice palace to live in over there and a few million quid a year to live on , she'd really like that I think . Tell you what , if you take her we'll throw the Duke of Edinburgh in as well free of charge . Can't be fairer that that , can I?
Sorry if it seems like I'm trying to palm her off on the Irish but we really don't want her in England anymore..
