Word is out right now that Fine Gael—should they get into government—are going to reverse the hard fought ban on the Ward Union carted stag hunt. Should the party get their wicked way and repeal this only piece of legislation, it will set our movement in Ireland back and will cast a dark day for all campaigning to bring about an end to cruelty to animals. read full story / add a comment

Please print AFAR's poster calling on all voters to make use of their vote to keep Fine Gael out of power.

The majority of normal people do not want Stag hunting legalised again, even if the ban is not being enforced.

Place this poster in a prominent place to let people know how cruel they intend to be , that is if they get into Government.
They want STAG-HUNTING back!!! Its really unbelieveable. read full story / add a comment
FINE GAEL will pay at the polls for their anti-animal stance
national / animal rights / opinion/analysis Wednesday February 16, 2011 10:16 by Bernie Wright   image 1 image
The Fine Gael party has pledged, in its 2011 election manifesto to reverse the ban on the horrific practice of carted stag hunting.
This barbaric activity was banned by the outgoing government in June 2010 on both animal welfare and human safety grounds.

This barbaric "sport" involved hounding a farmed or semi-tame deer for miles across Meath and North County Dublin until it was cornered by a pack of hounds and mounted hunters. Some stags got hit by traffic, got injured by colliding with fences or barbed wire or collapsed from exhaustion. Many of the stags that were chased died days after the hunt from captive myopathy caused by stress.
NPWS reports reveal one Stag was drowned and another was choked. By the end of a days hunt, one, possibly two tame stags would be found with their tongues hanging out from exhaustion after a two to three hour chase.
The hunted Stag is wrestled into a crate by about six men at the conclusion of the hunt or left out as an outlier to be hunted again.

A new development in hunting circles has the obviously hard- up North Galway hunt touting for business on the website DONEDEAL.
Punters are invited to hunt, terrify and dismember foxes in Galway for the day and to celebrate St. Valentines day at a hunt ball with the hunters on Saturday night for 250euro a person. They will have about 75 people out hunting that day. All monies will go to the North Galway hunt.

Please boycott the Westwood Hotel in Galway. Also please send your thoughts on wildlife abuse to both the hunt and the Hotel.

Greyhound Action Ireland appeal to Tesco Clubcard Deals to remove their Irish Greyhound Racing deal from their brochure. Apparently 10 euro in clubcard vouchers will get you 40euro to spend at the Greyhound track. They say ‘experience the pace, the thrills and excitement that is a night at the dogs’.

We say racing causes the deaths and injuries of thousands of dogs annually. Dogs regularly found with mutilations, some drugged, burned, drowned , shot or just dumped in Ireland. This is well documented in the press. Over 25,000 Greyhound pups are born in Ireland annually. These are just the ones who are registered, others are killed at birth or as saplings due to no prospects at the track. See www.greyhound.org.uk for videos and more information in our IRELAND section.

The WARD UNION stag hunt is now banned. Mounted Fox hunting , hare hunting, beagling and the shooting of many of our native birds and wildlife continues to be legal. To enable us to monitor these activities we need more ordinary people living especially in County Meath and County Dublin to photograph hunters on public roads. This is perfectly legal and enables us to know the extent of hunting that is now taking place. We also require information on the whereabouts of any Red deer seen in the fields.

On the 18th January, the Commercial Court is due to decide on the amount of damages to be awarded against the Irish Coursing Club in a case it lost to a property developer that sued the Club for breach of contract over the sale of a strip of land in Clonmel, County Tipperary.

Limerick-based Greenband Investments won its case and the damages could amount to six million Euro or more.

The AOHS and CACS will be at the Dail on that day from 1-2pm asking the Irish government NOT to bailout the ICC .

At the end of August Time.com published an article containing a controversial opinion of co-founder of the most popular organization fighting (supposedly) for animal rights – Ingrid Newkirk. Mrs President, said, inter alia, that “Absolute purists should be living in a cave.” In the ranks of the activists PETA has been regarded as the organization which in no way improve the lot of animals. After another raid someone may even be tempted to declare that the organization becomes harmful, because denying ethical considerations justifies the same industry which is responsible for the holocaust of the animals. This in turn leads to the construction of the belief that everything is really okay, we should eat animals, we just need to kill them a bit more gently. This way, Burger King customers will soon become defenders of the animals. Anyway Gary L. Francione issued an excellent response to Mrs. Newkirk views. I urge you to read it to understand fully what I mean. read full story / add a comment

Smithfield HORSE market in Dublin 7 is held on the first Sunday of every month. It has been held every month for almost 280 years. Last Sunday the scene there was akin to a scene from Mad Max the movie. A tiny foal was abandoned in a sad neglected condition, two punch ups broke out with crowds charging dangerously to get a closer look. A man was spotted carrying a sword and Sulkies and 4-wheeled carts were raced around the roads despite the best efforts by Gardai to stop this. The incidents of two wheeled carts being ridden with distressed horses and at immense speed around the city roads are increasing at an alarming rate.
