Can anyone tell me as to why it is so difficult to have a basic need catered to regarding accessibility in Ireland? In this day and age you would think firstly that pure and utter logic would prevail, but with my expieriences, and with the so called "Celtic Tiger" we are years away from being a society that open doors. read full story / add a comment

I wish to express my serious concerns regarding the recent publication by the H.S.E. of the Hynes report on the death of Peter McKenna and related matters. Peter McKenna was 60 years old and had Down syndrome. He lived in St Michael's House until he was moved against the family's wishes to Leas Cross Nursing Home where he died. read full story / add a comment

‘Children can bring out the best and worst in adults’ says Ann Healey, a Playtherapist who lives in Courtmacsherry, Co Cork. ‘Depending on how we listen and respond to them, their interaction with us will be affected. I read a book many years ago called ‘Dibs in Search of Self’ by Virginia Axiline and it changed my whole approach to working with children. The recent cases of appalling treatment of families with intellectually disabled children at the hands of the Health Service Executive, North Eastern Division have thrown to the fore a concept which has been hitherto largely invisible – the power dynamics that underlie the field of disability. Response to an address given at a public meeting held in Dunmanway, Co Cork on Thursday the 22nd of September on the subject of Special Education Needs .The meeting was organised by the West Cork Parents Action Group and its aims were to discuss the effect of recent changes in the administration and teaching of children with special needs, resulting from the introduction of the Education of Persons with Special Needs Act 2004. read full story / add a comment

Camphill Community, Ballytobin, near Callan in County Kilkenny, is a small rural community caring at present for 22 children and 12 adults, all with disabilities. It was established in 1979 as a therapeutic farm, to provide a home and school maily for children with exceptional needs, some with multiple disabilities and disturbances. This video was made during their recent Open Day and tries to give a feeling of what that day was like along with some history and a bit about the renewable energy and sustainable living projects that are going on out there. read full story / add a comment

'Jason is special to me because he has a disability and is different from other people. Since he’s been born he has not been able to see, hear, walk or talk. I know he is a gifted person because he got communion when he was 18 years old, and he received it on my sister’s birthday. I watch Jason when my mom is doing things around the house. I hold him on my lap and hug him because he is so little. Sometimes I give him his drink after supper. I taught Jason to drink by himself. I don’t like it when he pulls my hair but he doesn’t seem to understand.’ This is a quotation from a personal account by Lizzie Suwala on the Sibling Support Project website and she was 9 years old when she wrote it. read full story / add a comment

When Alan and Mary Crosbie's fifth child was born with Down syndrome they discovered how little help and advice were available to parents in their situation. They threw themselves into doing the best they could for their son Rob, who is now 6 years old. If you think the disability bill recently passed in the Dail has nothing to do with you, you should think again. If passed into legislation, it represents a major assault on all our constitutional rights. This column has no political allegiance and is concerned with the interests of disabled people and the contribution they can make to the wider community. In that context and for reasons set out below, it is nevertheless necessary to say that Fianna Fail and the PDs deserve a roasting on this issue alone at the next general election. read full story / add a comment

Margaret O’ Donoghue and Carmel O’ Donoghue (no relation) are determined to highlight the needs of parents of children with special needs in schools. As Chair and Secretary of the recently founded West Cork Parents Action Group they are encouraged by the interest they have had from parents since starting the group a few months ago. The inaugural meeting of the WCPAG was held at the Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway on 21st April this year. read full story / add a comment |
