Full story with vids at url. To mark and celebrate 100 years of International Women’s Day, a one day conference was held on 12 March 2011 to discuss the impact of religion on the lives of women. The conference was organised by One Law for All and the International Committee against Stoning, Iran Solidarity, and Equal Rights Now. The day started with an opening address by renowned philosopher A C Grayling which was followed by a hugely successful conference with speakers from across the world creating a vibrant and very important debate. read full story / add a comment

Lamya Kaddor confronts the myths regarding the wearing of the Hijab. She shows that this is not an observance required by Islam. Rather it is an invention of misogynistic mullahs. Full text at link. However, if God had required a special head covering, would He not have said so explicitly? The khimâr thus merely constitutes a 'fashion accessory' according to the spirit of that age. Viewed rationally, functions consciously or unconsciously associated with head coverings across the course of history – such as protection against sand or evil influences – are all superannuated today and have lost their validity. When we think of American contractors in times of war we think of recent conflicts. Private contractors are not new, but the recent phenomenon regarding the extent to which private contractors are currently utilized is well known. There are famous/ infamous companies, depending on which is being discussed, though it seems many of the big names all have scandal attached to them. However, they all seem to maintain their lucrative US taxpayer funded contracts, funded most often unknowingly by people from my country the USA. read full story / add a comment

On March 8, for the second time in a week, demonstrators gathered in the streets of Tehran and other major cities in Iran to protest against the regime - despite its attempts at suppression, its armed security forces, its tear gas and its arrests. Thirty-two years ago, on March 8 1979, tens of thousands of Iranian women took part in the first major demonstration against the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran, following the forced imposition of the hijab. The women’s slogans were: “I say it every moment, I say it under torture: either death or freedom!” “Freedom is neither eastern nor western: it is universal!” “Death to censorship!” “In the dawn of freedom, the place of women is empty: revolution is meaningless without women’s freedom - we do not want the hijab!” read full story / add a comment

Around 80 people took part in Sunday's annual Feminist Walking Tour to mark International Women's Day. The tour was organised by Choice Ireland, Lashback and RAG and for the first time was confined to the south side of the city, starting at Stephen's Green and ending up in Temple Bar. As the womenss movement and progressive throughout the world celebrate International women's day HOPI Ireland ask people in Ireland not to forget those who do not have even basic human rights. HOPI (Hands off the People of Iran) Ireland wish to remind people today to remember the plight of Iranian women suffering under the dictatorship of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the state control that stops them from the same rights that many women in Ireland take for granted: the right to work, the right to education, the right to protest and even the right to dress in the way they want. read full story / add a comment
