Republican Sinn Fein is organising a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, October 5th at the GPO, Dublin from 6pm - 7pm on the 30th Anniversary of the ending of the 1981 hunger strike.

Please bring some candles with you and ask your neighbours and friends to

Was it not Oct 3rd when the strike was finally called off ?

I believe that the date of this memorial is irrelevant, remembering the sacrifice of all the hungerstrikers is the important part. Well done Sharon yet again for your efforts. I have strong and sad memories of that period. I resent the fact that the sacrifice of those brave men has been wasted and abused by the leadership of sinn fein. I find it hard to understand or to forgive.

Hi Question !
"Was it not Oct 3rd when the strike was finally called off ?"
It was indeed October 3rd , 1981 , when that hunger-strike was called off , but RSF were unable to hold the vigil on that actual date (ie October 3rd 2011) due to the time needed to finalise the October issue of 'Saoirse' , which was due in the printers that same day.

Hi Redundant Republican !

Thanks for that -appreciated!
I was half afraid you were going to 'pull me up' re the October 5th time (6pm-7pm) being 'wrong' , as well....
;-)
Thanks,
Sharon.

This might be a good time also to reflect on the courageous efforts of "the father of Irish Republicanism": and the sad manner and circumstances of his lonely death in a Dublin jail?

The excerpt below, which has been very slightly edited -- for the purpose of including all the Irishwomen of 2011 -- is from the Original Declaration of the Society of United Irishmen formed by Theobald Wolfe Tone and close associates around 1791.

"And we do call on, and most earnestly exhort, our countrymen in general to follow our example, and to form similar societies in every quarter of the kingdom for the promotion of constitutional knowledge , the abolition of bigotry in religion and politics, and the equal distribution of the rights of men (and women!!) through all sects and denominations of Irishmen (and Irishwomen)."
