'Populists' like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage are a "threat to democracy", chant the mainstream media. In fact, they are just reminding our politicians what they are supposed to be doing, says Prof James Alexander.

I hope you are well and fighting back where ever you are against these harsh policies of austerity being imposed on our people. Call Out
Saturday 12th October 13:00pm Parnell Square

Dear all,

I hope you are well and fighting back where ever you are against these harsh policies of austerity being imposed on our people. I am writing to invite you to come out and join the Spectacle of Defiance and Hope as it once again takes to the streets along with the Dublin Trades Council to protest against the budget decisions that will come down hard on our people.

This government has not been kind to the most vulnerable people; the seniors, children, young people, the disabled, lone parents, migrants, families and communities. Communities have taken hard knocks as a result of austerity. Austerity does kill! We have witnessed it at the grassroots. Projects being closed, death by one thousand cuts – destroyed!

Direct challenges are happening to the structures that we have built up over 30 years. Many of us have invested our lives in building community structures from the bottom up addressing extremely serious issues and needs experienced by oppressed communities such as; poverty, violence, drugs and unemployment. We cannot let them take anymore. Community development in its radical form is to challenge and change the unjust structures of our society. The gap between the rich and poor has been encouraged to grow wider as a result of austerity. There is no will by this current administration to close the gap.

We have the responsibility to defend and fight for our people and those suffering at this present time in Irish society. Don’t give in to the line “What does protesting achieve”. Protesting is only part of the process but we must be part of the movement who will defend the most vulnerable in this war against the poor. The Spectacle says “No to austerity” “No to the cruelty of these policies” and “No to the unjust decision of our present government who protects the wealthy and the bondholders over its ordinary people. The Spectacle are asking you to do an action by joining us on Saturday the 12th of October at 13:00 in Parnell Square.

In solidarity
