The Progressive Film Club: Questions of Identity

category dublin | miscellaneous | event notice author Sunday February 02, 2014 11:25author by Eamon Mc Caughey - Progressive Film Club Report this post to the editors

Films on the nature of identity

The Progressive film club's first screening of the New Year features two films about the question of identity. Continuing our policy of encouraging new talent, we also include a short, first film from a young film maker from the UK

February 22nd at The New Theatre, East Essex Street Dublin 2

Admission FREE

2.30pm Dream Apocalypse: UK – 10mins
Ismael Ahmed, University of Bedfordshire

Dream Apocalypse tells the poignant tale of what it is like to be a student in England today. We follow Joel Muckett's life experiences and his hopes of hanging on to his dream of going to university, in spite of his disillusionment with the commodification of higher education in the UK. The increasing cost may put this education beyond his means and his dream may be a dying dream. This is Ismael’s first film.

2.45pm Colour of the Soul: India/Spain – 47mins (Spanish with English subtitles)
Produced and directed by: Alberto Martos: Spain

THE COLOR OF THE SOUL is a documentary which seeks to address and deepen the principles on which the caste system in India is based. The social system is not without controversy and paradoxes. In India, Birth has a Color.

3.45pm National Identity: France – 80mins (French with English subtitles)
Valérie Osouf : Producer/Director Granit Films / Divali Films,

In France, for more than 30 years, foreign nationals account for about 20% of the prison population, even though they only represent between 6 and 8 per cent of the overall population. This over-representation is explained by political choices since the end of the 1970s, particularly the repression of immigrants.
