Robin Gill Cottage - Eco Restoration via IndiGoGo

category longford | housing | press release author Friday June 27, 2014 21:34author by Tom Cartyauthor email thomascarty at cartyweb dot ie Report this post to the editors

After a May Day Bank Holiday fire, an IndiGoGo crowdfund is running for the eco restoration of Robin Gill cottage

Last May bank holiday, a fire at the cottage in Ballinamuck burned everything back to the walls. To get it back on track, an IndiGoGo campaign is being started.

The cottage was an eco restoration which was being sold as the previous owner ran out of funds

The cottage was an eco restoration which was being sold as the previous owner ran
out of funds.

I was looking to move back to North Longford as its where the family are from, and
while this is the wrong side of Cairn Hill (these things do matter you know,
otherwise your not local!!!) the purchase was of the heart as much as the head.

It featured a rainwater tank which filled from the roof, batteries for power, and
all was landed, solar panels, cabling, etc., to put everything together before the
fire struck.

Everything was destroyed.

The IndiGoGo campaign was launched, and is 10% funded at time if writing.

What Is to be done:

We need to get the roof on pronto:

The walls need to be repaired where cracked.
Wallplates need to be built on them.
Roof to be raised to give attic access.
Seebeck generators to be installed
New solar panels (PV and for hot water) for roof
Well to be drilled
Incinerator toilet to be purchased

The Projected Project

When finished, it will feature a propane eco toilet, that works by incineration, as
well as TEG heat to electric harvesting systems, and so in the eco world it is set
to be cutting edge.

When will this happen?

The first thing is to secure the walls and put back the roof. It was set to be
finished totally in the next six months, but we are now looking at three years.

What will my contributions do?

The immediate project is to repair the walls, place on a ringbeam and the roof.
After that, insulation all over, plumbing, basic furnishing. It will be livable at
this stage.
Next stage is the solar banels, battery shed and wiring and sundried and a windmill.
After that the incinerator toilet and the TEG's will be fitted.

What is the Robin Gill Cottage?

The reputed birthplace of the 1798 leader, Robin Gill
