 They demanded that U.S. troops withdraw from the Philippines right now and condemned the expansion of the U.S. war from Afghanistan to the Philippines, and probably soon to Iraq. The demonstration was organized by the Centre for Philippine Concerns (CPC), a Montreal-based group which supports the national democratic movement in this country Montreal: Troupes US, hors des Philippines! Aujourd'hui 17 mars, environ 150 personnes se sont rassemblés dans le quartier ouvrier de Côte-des-Neiges à Montréal pour dénoncer le récent débarquement des troupes américaines aux Philippines. Organisée par le Centre d'appui aux Philippines, la manifestation visait à exiger le retrait immédiat des troupes américaines et à dénoncer l'expansion de la guerre dirigée par les États-Unis qui menacent maintenant de s'en prendre à l'Irak. Partis-es du parc McKenzie-King près du métro Côte Ste-Catherine, les manifestantes et manifestants ont défilé dans les rues de ce quartier populaire où on retrouve une forte communauté philippine, scandant des slogans en français, en anglais et en tagalog. À différents endroits au cours du trajet, des orateurs et oratrices ont pris la parole pour exprimer leur solidarité avec la lutte du peuple philippin. Parmi elles et eux, mentionnons les porte-parole des groupes suivants: Objection de conscience (un groupe qui milite contre l'embargo économique contre l'Irak), l'Alliance juive et palestinienne contre l'occupation, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, le Centre d'étude et de recherche sur l'Asie du Sud (CERAS), Purple Rose Campaign (une campagne internationale contre le trafic des femmes des Philippines), la Convergence des luttes anticapitalistes (la CLAC), la Jeunesse philippine de Montréal (Kabataang), le British Colombia Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines, l'Association des étudiants philippins de l'Université Carleton (Ottawa), le Filipino Workers Support Group, le Comité pour les droits humains en Colombie et le Parti communiste révolutionnaire (comités d'organisation). Avant de se disperser, les manifestantes et manifestants ont immolé un tank surmonté du drapeau américain ainsi qu'une marionnette géante représentant l'impérialisme US; suite à quoi la représentante du Centre d'appui aux Philippines a appelé tout le monde à s'unir dans un large front anti-impérialiste, en solidarité avec les luttes des peuples. Des appels à la mobilisation ont également été lancés par la CLAC et le PCR(co) en prévision du Sommet du G-8 qui se tiendra à la fin juin au Canada, et de la journée internationale des travailleurs et des travailleuses, le 1er mai. La tenue de la manifestation d'aujourd'hui, suite à laquelle on ne déplore aucune arrestation, constitue une victoire dans le contexte où l'État et les forces de l'ordre cherchent à étouffer et à criminaliser les luttes du peuple. Il y a deux jours à peine, la quasi-totalité (371 personnes) des participantes et des participants à la manifestation annuelle du Collectif opposé à la brutalité policière (le COBP) ont été arrêtés-es, du seul fait de leur présence à cet événement, ce qui constitue vraisemblablement la plus grande arrestation de masse à Montréal depuis la crise d'Octobre en 1970. Starting from the McKenzie-King park near the Cote Ste-Catherine metro station, protestors took to the streets and marched in this workers neiborhood where many Filipino are living, chanting slogans both in French, in English and in Tagalog. At different points all along the demo, speakers from many organizations expressed ther solidarity with the struggle of the Filipino people. Among them were: Voice Objection (a group which fights against the economic embargo against Iraq), the Jewish and Palestinian Alliance Against the Occupation, Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights, the Centre for Study and Research on South Asia, the Purple Rose Campaign, the Anti-Capitalist Convergence (a.k.a. CLAC), Kabataang-Montreal (Montreal Filipino Youth), the British Colombia Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines, the Filipino Students Association of Carleton University (Ottawa), the Filipino Workers Support Group, the Commitee for Human Rights in Colombia and the Revolutionary Communist Party (Organizing Committees). Before ending the demo, protesters burned a U.S. tank and a giant puppet representing U.S. imperialism. The spokesperson of the CPC finally called all the people to unite in a large anti-imperialist front, in solidarity with the people's struggle around the world. Calls for mobilization against the G-8 Summit which is to be held in Canada in June, and for the International Workers Day on May 1st have also been made, notably by the CLAC and the RCP(OC). The holding of today's demo - where there has been no arrest - represents a victory against the State and the police who are trying to criminalize and prevent any people's struggle. Last Friday, 371 people have been arrested following their participation to the annual demonstration against police brutality organized by the COBP (Collectif oppose a la brutalite policiere). This seems to be the most important mass arrest in Montreal since the October crisis en 1970. For more information:
