Thirty Left-wing MPs have written to Ofcom to press it to censor X under the Online Safety Act. The evidence of 'hate' on the platform is threadbare, but it's obvious why they want to clip its wings, says Laurie Wastell.

The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

2 Anti-War Demos

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday October 30, 2002 18:37author by Nicholas McMurry - GP, CPA Report this post to the editors

Two anti-war demonstrations have been called for successive days.

I am not a member of either of the following organisations, but it is my understanding that the following events have been organised:

(a) The Irish Anti-War Movement has called a march in Dublin on Saturday 7th December.

(b) The Grassroots Gathering has called a march in Shannon on Sunday 8th December.

I understand from people I know in either organisation, was that neither group was aware that the other march had been organised. No antagonism seems to have been intended on either side.

Hopefully the two successive days of activism will create greater momentum rather than greater difficulties. I hope that as many people as possible will actively support both events.

Clearly, whatever difficulties exist between individuals and groups, there can be greater effort on all sides to improve communication so that a clash can be prevented in future.

Neither of these events seem to be published on indymedia, and I'm not cannot represent either organisation. However, it might be helpful if people were aware what is definitely happening as soon as possible.

I hadn't heard of the Sunday demonstration in Shannon.

But I can say building for the National Demonstration on Saturday December 7th is well underway.

I have already distributed hundreds of leaflets for the Irish Anti War Movement demonstraion on December 7th.

A number of local anti-war groups have begun getting organised recently and preparing for December 7. Among those I have personally seen include Ballymun Against the War, a schoolstudents group in Finglas and another group of activists in Fairview in Dublin.

There are, I believe, many more getting going across the country. These are broad-based, grass roots anti war activists and lcoal people laying the basis for an anti war movement that permeates through Ireland.

The December 7th National Protest in Dublin will be a major event to express this growing movement.

A couple of weeks ago a meeting of 17 people in Dingle set up a local group of the Irish Anti War Movement, brought people to the recent protest in Shannon and are now organsing for December 7th.

December 7th will be a national march on the US Embassy. I hope we can make it massive -- even bigger than the 3,000 plus at the end of September.

Best of luck to the Sunday protest too.

I am based in Finglas and would like to help distribute leaflets. Can you let me know when leaflet distribution is planned so I can help?

John
