We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Questions on RTS 'Riot' for lazy journos

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday November 18, 2002 22:54author by Ghost Report this post to the editors

Why RTS described as a riot when it was a 'police riot'?

Questions that need to be asked...

Omerta operating in the Irish Police?

Did officers in charge on Dame Street refuse to co-operate with the investigation?

Did Gardai other than rank and File refuse co-operation?

Was anyone other than rank and file interviewed?

Was Garda Commissioner interviewed? After all he was in charge.

When will the Gardai release CCTV and Helicopter footage of the events?

Who decided on Gardai Tactics on the Day? Who gave the word to use batons to clear Dame Street?

Was CCTV footage from businesses on Dame street used or requisitioned by the investigation?

Could the Gardai who conspired on a widescale basis to protect those breaking the law be charged with aiding and abetting a criminal Offence? The guy said there were about 30 of them.

Did the inquiry deal with the Burlington incident where batons were used on people sitting on the ground? ground?

Should there be an Independent Public Enquiry? And I do mean Independent (No FF Pols/No PDs/No Gardai) Gardai)

Who polices the police.

With reference to a previous comment the Gardai can demand footage. They attempted to get mine.

Don't believe half of what you hear and none of what you see.

as do many other ghosts.

>Omerta operating in the Irish Police?

Like they'd tell us, but thats hardly relevant point here.

>Did officers in charge on Dame Street refuse to >co-operate with the investigation?

Officers from Superintendent level upwards were described as "most helpful", according Gordon Holmes. You can assume they were interviewed.

>Did Gardai other than rank and File refuse co->operation?

No.

>Was anyone other than rank and file interviewed?

See previous answer.

>Was Garda Commissioner interviewed? After all he >was in charge.

Indirectly and probably no.

>When will the Gardai release CCTV and Helicopter >footage of the events?

Not the complaints boards issue, or remit to answer. I can assume yes, when cases go to trial.

>Who decided on Gardai Tactics on the Day? Who >gave the word to use batons to clear Dame Street?

Near as I can tell no order was given, it came out of confusion, several officers drew batons, other officers took their lead. Radio reports on the day were confusing and officers arriving on the scene were under the impression that major rioting had occured, other officers had been injured, and a car had been set on fire. The came onto the scene, and took the lead from other officers on the ground.

I think this highlights Gardaí mis communication and poor tactics, and should be seen as such. Not as some sinister plot to beat the hippies.

>Was CCTV footage from businesses on Dame street >used or requisitioned by the investigation?

The investigation can't demand footage only request it. The CCTV footage was of remarklably poor quality.

>Could the Gardai who conspired on a widescale >basis to protect those breaking the law be >charged with aiding and abetting a criminal >Offence? The guy said there were about 30 of them.

Nope. File under reason why the complaints board needs to be revamped.

>Did the inquiry deal with the Burlington >incident where batons were used on people >sitting on the ground? ground?

Er, no. It wasn't set up to cover that.

>Should there be an Independent Public Enquiry? >And I do mean Independent (No FF Pols/No PDs/No >Gardai) Gardai)

Set up by whom? The Gardaí have shot themselves in the foot on this one. There is no way anyone can say that the current system works. We're looking at a total overhaul of the complaints system.

Which is pretty incredible.

Who polices the police.

attended an international conference on policing in Den Haag, Nederlands last year.
The conference dealt with co-operation between European policeforces and sharing of intelligence.
It also treated upon public order issues as related to public gatherings and protest.
It is believed that reference was made to this in the aftermath of May bank holiday weekend. Senior Gardaí have no excuse for the very poor management of their own forces.

was on morning ireland thia am. it was left to michael mcdowell to represent rts ;)

actually stone made such a gobshite of himself, defendfing gardai who had refused to help the tribunal, mcdoweel has to attack him.

mcdowell stated that under new regulations hes devising, it will be compulsary for gardai to assist the complaints board. (do not hold your breath)

however...

has anyone made complaints about inspectors & sergeants who are on film, not attacking anyone, but standing by while gardai baton people?
complaints about dereliction of duty could be made against supervisory gardai in these circumstances.
