The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

U.S Officials flee Bush Regime and some extra information on a possible propaganda escalation

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday December 17, 2002 19:11author by AL Report this post to the editors

The title says it all

Don't know if this is true but if it is then the war machine may be tearing at the seams.

Many officials that have been part of the US insistence on the threat of Iraq and the necessity of war are apparently finding sanctuary in Sweden, where they are protected (to what degree is unknown) and can speak freely of the covert tactics of the US as they overplay and falsify the threat to themselves and other countries.

On another, but similar note, the propaganda machine maybe be gearing up for a Cuban Missile Crises/Sandanista threat approach to gain support for the war (pretty inevitable really when you see the administrative line up from that period and this). An article in the New York Times (16 December, 2002) describes how the Pentagon are proposing an escalation in military covert operations aimed at influencing public opinion and policy makers in friendly and neutral countries. Although I think they probably do this already and have done for a long time, it may be of use for someone writing up on it, or to use it in mainstream media (if they have some pull) in order to increase the public awareness and opposition/action against the war.

There's no fee to read the New York Times, I do it every day. You just register with a fake name and address and it sends a cookie, big fucking deal.

And this story is nonsense. It's almost worthy of the Onion but not quite funny enough.

Sorry, I mean it's just not true. Try searching for any of the names or keywords in the article and you only get the same article back, reprinted on a couple of other weblogs.
