The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

FOREST CAMPAIGN GAINING MOMENTUM (pics available)

Last Sunday about 60 people gathered at Damien House, Cootehill, before walking to a Oak woodland in Dartry forest. Local campaigners say the woodland is threatened by Coillte's mismanagement of Dartry and plans to cut several Oak trees in the coming days.

Sem Karoba, a visiting ecology expert and independence activist from Indonesian occupied West Papua addressed the crowd and spoke of his love for nature and the need to change our culture of greed, waste and mistreating our environment. He called on local residents to urge Coillte and their political representatives to ensure Dartry is protected and preserved for future generations.

The campaign is gathering momentum. Coillte have already cleared a pathway for machinery. Campaigners have placed petitions in local shops, developed an information website ( http://www.briansdesign.com/oaks ) and called an urgent public meeting for Thursday January 9th in the White Horse Hotel. All are welcome and encouraged to spread the word.

hey well done, here is something we can do!
well ye can do. I got very depressed over the last while, but then remembered the axiom.
THINK GLOBALLY = ACT LOCALLY
so save "those black hills that stare eternally noth towards Armagh"[º]....and talk about water-oxygen-oil-south american-special effect TV war fiction sequels whilst you´re doing it!
thank you, if i was in Eire I´d go up there.

Where's Eire?

author by iosaf jedi of the maps.publication date Wed Jan 08, 2003 12:58author address author phone Report this post to the editors

as you probably know Rockall is an important Oil and Gas and little fish site.
administered by the UK government since the 1950s when an eager frigate captain plonked a union jack upon it claiming it for Mrs Saxe Coburg Goethe of Windsor. Since then it has proved a happy holiday break for a licensed SAS murderer.

Mann is a nordic kingdom and tax haven in the Sea to the west of Sellafield THORP Windscale, which boasts birching, rightwing politics, a seat on the British Irish council and the best off shore banking in Europe.

The Manx speak English with a northern burr and gaelic with a RTE recieved lilt.
The editor of the Manx newspaper used to be a member of the Orange Order and spent a while in Spain sharing a flat with a member of the communist party during the transition.

Eire is strange idea.
De Valera a theocratic machiavellian character with notions of external association wrote a constitution for this mythical land in the mid 1930s, borrowing heavily from Fascist notions of a corporative state.

Eire is of course very unfashionable these days.

The Land of Erron occupies roughly the same geographic position as Eire most of the time.

Ireland is something very different.
Ireland is modern forward looking democracy with software galore and frolicking kids dancing nay raving at peace camps and crossroads day and night.
Ireland can be expereinced at the newly opened "Temple Bar" irish pub on Calle Ferran, Barcelona 08002.
