The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Boycott at Shannon

Any more detail?

This morning's Examiner has a story about the prospect of workers at Shannon refusing to handle cargo from World Airlines and other companies.

This morning's Examiner has a story about the prospect of workers at Shannon refusing to handle cargo from World Airlines and other companies. Follow http://www.examiner.ie/pport/web/ireland/index.asp for more detail but I would like to know if these guys come from a particular company so that I can get on the company's backs about it too. Is this going to become a union-based issue? and if so, let's get moving on some support for these workers.

Thanks you folks for helping refuelling the US Air Force Warplanes. I just want to
let you know that you have blood on your hands too for the many 10s of thousands of
innocent Iraqi people that we are going to bomb so as to keep the supply of cheap oil
coming over to the US here.

regards
G.W. Bush

P.S. The War on Terror is a joke! It is just a cover for the class war. See how I give
tax breaks to the rich, nothing to the poor and thrash the environment.

It's great to know I can rely on folks like you who have no conscience.

It's an interesting article as it carries an anonymous quote from an airport worker "One airport worker, who declined to be named, said a number of staff were gathering support for a boycott.

The worker said:'I just feel very hypocritical about it all the time. I'm making my living partly by helping these people go to war. There is a feeling that this shouldn't be happening among a good few of the workers here. The engines of the State are facilitating this. State agencies and departments are up to their necks in what's going on.'"

Any significant number of workers at the airport initating such an action would stop refueling straight away. Note that the official union comment in the article is pretty half-hearted (probably afraid of threatenting the 'partnership' deal).

If action is taken we would need to re-focus a lot of the activity there around building solidarity for the workers concerned both in the town and amongst workers elsewhere.
