The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4It sounds like the old "we've sold our neutrality to the highest bidder and many peoples jobs depend on it" argument.
Will people working for US multi-nationals be willing to put their jobs on the line for the sake of our Neutrality? Some will (including myself) but I suspect that most won't.
However, we will never know the answer to that question, if the Government continues to act in the cowardly fashion it has thus far.
To Bertie Ahern I would ask the question immortalised by the former Irish Rugby captain in a match against England, "Have you no f*^&ing pride?"
The last sentence says it all:
"Deputy Power added that when making their alarmist claims the protesters should remember the close links this country
has with the US, and the assistance America has provided with our own Peace Process and through investment"
Deputy Power is saying the protestors are 'alarmist' because they are not licking the US ass and they are getting
muddled up about the war being immoral. Deputy Power finds it immoral not to low under the yoke of the US.
The Bully Cowan was pontificating the other day that we should show solidarity with any European countries that end up in a war! I suppose this includes England when Blair starts a war with Iraq. The minister for defense I cannot remmember the bozo's name let the cat out of the bag as John Gormley said by making ridiculous comments about there really being no such thing as neutrality! These corrupt FF clowns are making Ireland into a military target just to satisfy their short twerm greed as usual.
your TD says:
Deputy Power added that when making their alarmist claims the protesters should remember the close links this country has with the US, and the assistance America has provided with our own Peace Process and through investment.
yes.
8 billion irish pounds in EEC / EC / EU aid.
i know the oil is very expensive.
youīre paying "top whack".
but it isnīt going to get any cheaper.
And you have "de facto" entered a war.
the opposing people all hold one religion and speak one language.
None of you little rascals speak that language.
Let me draw your attention to what is known as
"background noise".
Ireland is in this war with the UK and USA.
and EU.
and NATO.
you know that.
I know that.
Iraq knows that.
Iran knows that.
Libya knows that.
UAE knows that.
Saudi Arabia knows that.
all the islamic states know that.
do you like muslims FF?
yes of course you do.
that is why you listen to background noise isnīt it?
Now you donīt have any serious defence strategy for your part of the island do you?
no you donīt.
oh dear.
you most certainly are paying top whack for the oil arenīt you?
and so are your american friends and investors.
how many barrels of blood are you prepared to pay for the oil?
you might get a clue from listening to background noise.
or if youīre too busy, Iīll give you little clues.
like
They see an escalation of US/UK aggression on Iraq (they have been bombing the place for years) as an attack on global Islam.
oh dear.
They certainly get paid top whack for the oil, and you know as well I do that they arenīt stupid, and that they love weapons.
Very big countries.
Let the UN work.
Think about your little country.
the bit you "rule".
Very hard to find weapons there eh?
and sure didnīt your great
great
great
great
great
grandmother
not keep a pike in the thatch
after ī98.
Was that the last time you listened to the French?
maybe.
I do try to let you know about the background noise.
I sometimes provide some of it, which you probably find annoying.
God you might think that gobshite really gets in the way of honest intelligence work.
Because that really is the speciality of Ireland isnīt it.
I mean you know everything donīt you?
get real.
Stop the escalation.
Saddam isnīt going away.
and nor is the threat.
but Bush just might.
wouldnīt that be great for the Irish american investment community.
And donīt pretend you havenīt thought it, because one of you said it on Sunday over a game of golf.
Great game golf.
I think itīs a waste of land myself, but then again I just think about food.
