We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Clare Refuse Rise Condemned

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday January 25, 2003 16:01author by Republican Report this post to the editors

Clare Republican Sinn Féin There has been an increase of over thirty euro in the cost of refuse collection in County Clare over last year and this is more than twice the rate of inflation, the local branch of Republican Sinn Féin said today.

RSF vice-president Des Long said that the decision by the members of Clare County Council to privatize the collection of refuse has imposed considerable hardship on many people in the County.

"The fact is that the Councillors an now distance themselves from increases such as that imposed by the private company for 2003," said Mr. Long.

"This above inflation rate increase is the trend for the future and people will have no control over the cost of the service.

"Indeed by their actions is distancing themselves from the rate increase, the Clare County Councillors are abandoning the idea of local democracy.

"It is now obvious that the elected Councillors who voted to bring in the private service have not acted in the interests of those who elected them.

"It is time that the people of County Clare made a stand against this erosion of local democracy and we are now calling on the elected Councillors to make known their views on the 2003 increases. The cost of the refuse service must be kept within the limits of inflation - and we are now calling on the Council to ensure that such rises are subject to strict controls."

Timmy King, Munster Republican Sinn Féin

January 25, 2003

The cost of purchasing a refuse sack in Limerick has been increased by fifty percent in a New Year price rise, according to the chairman of the Munster Executive of Republican Sinn Féin.

Timmy King from Limerick told delegates from all over Munster that the refuse increases were now imposing considerable hardship on ordinary people throughout the country.

He was addressing RSF members from Limerick, Clare, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford at an Executive meeting in Limerick today, Saturday 25th January 2003.

"In nearby County Clare there has been a savage increase way above the level of inflation," he said. "We are now calling on the local councillors to protest at these increases in refuse collection charges.

"There can be no justification for local councillors washing their hands of the problem. In many cases the local council members are responsible for voting to privatise the refuse service. They have placed a public service into private and uncontrolled hands.

"This Pontius Pilate style act will cut no ice with the electorate at the upcoming local elections in just over a year's time. We in Republican Sinn Féin intend to make the level of refuse charges an election issue and our candidates will be out canvassing on a platform of rigid control of refuse charge costs."
