The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

no iraqi links to al qaeda says leaked report

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday February 05, 2003 18:41author by Damien DeBarraauthor email damiendebarra at blather dot net Report this post to the editors

from bbc website

As Colin Powell stands before the UN and attempts to convince the world that Hussein and his regime are actively supporting Bin Laden and his cronies, a Britsh governemnt report is leaked stating (in no uncertain terms) that no such links exist. We used to have a phrase for this when i was at school: 'being caught by the bo**cks' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2727471.stm

As we know Iran is the next target. There is a very good interview with Chomsky,
from which I have selected a short section dealing with Iran and how it will be
setup. It is obvious, the US will help to stir up trouble and then invade Iran to
rescue the Iraqis from the Iranians.

But an even bigger gem is in this, because it refers to the fact that Bush I kept
Saddam in power, just when the Iraqi people were in a real position to overthrow him,
because at that time (as I remember) the US suddenly allowed the Iraqi's to use their
helicopters to crush the rebellion that Bush I actively encouraged. I remember him
on the TV urging the Iraqis to rise up against Saddam. And then suddenly they were
crushed by Saddam because the Iraqi army were allowed use their helicopters again.

The purpose of the exercise was to flush out those most likely to rebel, then kill
them and this ensured no-one would try again for a long long time. The last thing the
US wants is democracy in Iraqi. God forbid, the Iraqis might then want to control their
own oil and get a fair price for it. In Iran in the late 50s a democratically elected
leader who nationalized (BP's) oil was assassinated by the CIA/MI5. The dictator -the Shah
was installed instead. And the rest is history.

From Chomsky interview:

"On the other hand, it's possible it could be what the hawks in Washington hope - a
quick victory, no fighting to speak of, impose a new regime, give it a democratic
façade, make sure the US has big military bases there, and effectively controls the oil.

The chances that they will allow anything approximating real democracy are pretty
slight. There's major problems in the way of that - problems that motivated Bush No 1
to oppose the rebellions in 1991 that could have overthrown Saddam Hussein. After
all, he could have been overthrown then if the US had not authorised Saddam to crush
the rebellions.

One major problem is that roughly 60% of the population is Shi'ite. If there's any form
of democratic government, they're going to have a say, in fact a majority say, in what
the government is. Well they are not pro-Iranian but the chances are that a Shi'ite
majority would join the rest of the region in trying to improve relations with Iran and
reduce the levels of tension generally in the region by re-integrating Iran within it.
There have been moves in that direction among the Arab states and Shi'ite majority in
Iraq is likely to do that. That's the last thing the US wants. Iran is its next target. "

...the U.S. has been trying to stage coups in Venesuela to overthrow their Democratically elected government-because the stinkin Yanks don't think Venesuelans have the right to ask a fair price for their oil!
