The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Sinn Feinn bank accounts to be drained

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday February 11, 2003 13:59author by Robby - RNauthor email rob_s57 at hotmail dot comauthor address Dungannon Report this post to the editors

When people realize that when their words and actions fuel terrorism, THEY WILL PAY!

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has been ordered to give evidence in a £10m civil case against the alleged Real IRA members suspected of carrying out the 1998 Omagh bombing.

Sinn Fein MPs Martin McGuinness and Pat Doherty and two other republicans, Brian Gillen and Brian Keenan, have also been ordered to appear in court for the case, which was taken by relatives of some of the 29 victims.

Papers served in Belfast claim that Mr Adams and the other four led the Provisional IRA when Michael McKevitt, another leading republican, allegedly quit to set up the Real IRA.

Mr McKevitt, who is currently awaiting trial in Dublin for directing the activities of an illegal organisation, is one of the five people being sued by the Omagh relatives.

Mr Adams and his colleagues have been called to give evidence about five secret IRA meetings in 1996 and 1997 which led to McKevitt's resignation 10 months before the Omagh blast.

Sinn Féin linked to acts of political violence - Thousands shocked - "I'll never give those bastards money again," says Carl from Queens, "I had no idea anyone had ever alleged that Sinn Féin was in any way related to republican violence."

I thought that Mr. Adams and others were served with mere Witness Summones to come to the trial of the action to give evidence. They are not named as Defendants and it is not claimed they are responsible for the Plaintiff's Loss.

How are they going to pay? Will it be the first case is history in which Witnesses are order to pay compensation to the Plaintiff instead of the Defendant?
