The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Fr Brendan Purcell - UCD Fascist Philosopher and Government Propaganada

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday March 03, 2003 10:48author by James McKenna Report this post to the editors

justifies government secrecy and war on Iraq

RTE presented another propagandist from UCD on "The Midnight Court" with Damien Kiberd .

When it was put to Fr Purcell, who is a philosophy professor in UCD, by Damien Kiberd, that the present war on Iraq was in fact a Crusade supported by fundamentalists, he just smiled. When Damien asked him if indeed the Catholic Church itself did not bear an immense responsibility for this Crusade ethos since they still teach of Heroic Knights defending Christendom from the Muslim Hoards at the gates of Budapest and the Angelus bell itself commemorates the battle of La Panto and victory over the same Muslims/Ottamans in the 14th century, Fr Purcell used his ability to change the subject by saying "I'd much rather talk about St Francis". I'l bet you would Fr Purcell, why don't you try living like him then?

Whe the entire panel decried the Government for restricting the Freedom of information act, Fr Fascist from UCD said he "has a problem with the Freedom of Information Act anyway", and that it was better done away with as it causes too many "problems".

He wants less tribunals in Ireland and war in Iraq as it has already broken agreements that justify war(?).

Most of all, this man of astounding philosophy said the following in defence of a fascist state where we question nothing the Government does.

"If I vote for a TD I give HIM the responsibility to behave HIMSELF for HIS five years. I really don't feel I need to know........but effectively I think by voting I have expressed a trust in the person in there and I really don't want to be following (events), I really think I have to trust HIM."

This is what he impresses on young minds in UCD? Do not Question? Trust the politicians ? There needs to be serios inquiry into who put the likes of this guy where he is and how do we weed him out.
