We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

'Tips For Blending In...'

American Propaganda, for domestic consumption only...

The following is a good example of how the US media teach Americans to fear the outside world. It starts from the top with W Bush saying 'you are either with us or against us' and then the media chimes in from there.

Even the pro-war americans I've met traveling in Ireland say that this is a friendly (and debateful) place to be.

I have yet to read an article in an American paper that says 'Friends sentiments make American tourists feel welcome, in spite of war' - I wonder why?

Ugly sentiments sting American tourists

Tips for blending in

Concerned about being a magnet for anti-Americanism during your next trip abroad? Bruce McIndoe, CEO of iJet Travel Intelligence, offers his tips for staying under the radar:

- Avoid American fast-food restaurants and chains.

- Keep discussions of politics to private places, not rowdy bars.

- Take a rain check on wearing clothes featuring American flags or sports team logos.

- Keep your passport out of sight.

-Keep cameras, video equipment and maps tucked away.

- Soften your speech; Americans typically overshadow their hosts in the volume department.

This is all just prewar tension spilling over. When the invasion is underway and finished it'll be fine.

So my views on American foreign policy carry a lot of weight, you know.

Can you name all 29 administrative regions of India? Or even ten? What about the provinces of China? Member states of the Arab League? Countries the US has bombed since 1945? What is the name of the Indonesian head of state?

hint- check the CIA world factbook...

So, if I can list all 50 US states, I get to comment on US foreign policy? (And what if I only score in the high forties?)
But surely there should be some quid pro quo here, right? I reckon that if Bush can't name the capital cities of all 15 EU countries he should resign his post.
Anyone want to run a book on which of us is more likely to succeed?

locals might be forgiven for thinking you are one of the 300 SAS troops confirmed yesterday by the Ministry of Defence London to be in Iraq.
The readership will remember that I pointed out the confirmation on US covert combat troops after its confirmation by the Pentagon the week Feb 17-23. 2003.

As an Irish person living in the U.S for the last ten years I'd say this is not bad advice. If it saves you from having to listen to just one pain in the ass drunk in a pub lecture you on everyting that is wrong about the U.S. it is worth the effort.

Here is a test for all you people out there who thing that Americans don't know anything about anywhere outside of the U.S. (yes I'm talking to you). Get a pen and paper and wright down all fifty of the U.S states (no cheating). Now the vast majority of you won't be able to get more then thirty five of so. Go on you smug fools try it.

Now the next time you make jokes about Americans thinking that Brussels is in France or that Denmark is alongside Greece you will remember that you don't know shit about the U.S. and are not in a position to make judgements.
