The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Israel warns Web sites on war coverage

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday March 21, 2003 10:33author by CNET News Report this post to the editors

Israel's top government censor has warned Web sites in her country not to publish sensitive information about the war with Iraq. Chief Censor Rachel Dolev sent a letter on Wednesday to "scoop" news sites, instructing editors to seek government permission before publishing information about "materials that could pose a threat to the security of the State of Israel and its residents." Dolev's letter warned the sites, including Rotter.net and Fresh.co.il, not to publish the locations of any missile strikes, information about Israeli Cabinet deliberations or information about Israeli wartime cooperation with other governments such as that of the United States. Israel has ranked poorly in a press-freedoms index created by advocacy group Reporters Without Borders, ranking below the Palestinian National Authority, Zambia and Cambodia. Last year, the Committee to Protect Journalists condemned what it called "attempts by the (Israel Defense Forces) to intimidate the press from covering the IDF's widening military

Israel is a country at war, so war censorship rules apply. So what?

With whom is Israel at war ?
Please clarify - I was not aware that it had declared war on Iraq .....

Avi, stop whining. War is wrong, therefore "war censorship rules" are wrong.
The public's right to know is paramount.

Just in case you didn't know, Israel is still technically at war with most of the Arab world, including Syria, Iraq, Saudi, Libya, etc. etc. There is also the not so small matter of different Palestinian terror gangs such as the Fatah, Hezbollah, Hamas, who regularly murder Israelis and who wish to destroy the country. There is also Iran that has stated the same intention, and several of whose government ministers have just been indicted by the Argentinian State Prosecutor for blowing up a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires.

Obviously, when a country is at war, giving out information useful to enemies is dangerous.

I cannot believe that Iranian ministers travelled to Buenos Aires just to blow up some jewish center there .... sounds completely far-fetched ....

"giving out information useful to enemies is dangerous"
That excuse is used regularly by governments to cover up their own wrong-doing, and also to stifle dissent. I don't think those web sites are giving out any tactical military information.
Israel certainly seems to have a talent for making enemies, perhaps they should reflect on how they have contributed to causing that situation. It cannot be entirely the fault of the Arab world.

Anti-Semitism in Iran is well documented. However, it is now claimed by the Argentinian govt that the Iranian govt instigated and organised an atrocity against Jews in Buenos Aires. This is from the NY Times:

FOREIGN DESK
World Briefing | Americas: Argentina: Iranian Envoy Recalled

By Larry Rohter (NYT)

The highest-ranking diplomat at the Iranian Embassy has been recalled as a result of a growing dispute over responsibility for the bombing at a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires in 1994, which killed 85 people. An Argentine judge issued arrest warrants last week for four Iranian government officials, including two former cabinet ministers, who he said had helped organize the attack. The Iranian government reacted angrily, warning that ''Iran will adopt appropriate measures'' unless Argentina revokes the indictments. The diplomat who was recalled is the chargé d'affaires, Mohammad Ali Tabatabai; with relations already downgraded Iran does not have an ambassador in Buenos Aires. Larry Rohter (NYT)

You may also recall that in the last Gulf War, Iraq lobbed over 40 Scud missiles at Israeli cities when Israel wasn't even involved in that war.

By theway, in general, it would seem that the majority of Arabs have poisonous attitudes to Jews. They had them before Israel started. This reflects the backward nature of the Arab world, as it festers in ignorance and cruelty.

This guy sounds really credible ...

"Mr. Mesbahi, the Iranian defector who provided the testimony, met with Argentine investigators in Germany in 1998 and again in Mexico in 2000, speaking at various times in Persian, English, German and French with a Spanish-language translator present.

Argentine officials say that they are not sure of his current whereabouts, except that he remains under Germany's protection, and that they do not know if the name he gave is his real name."

Now if he was a Zionist defector revealing Mosaad activities we'd be hearing a different tune I think .....
