The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Police and Theives: Garda Thugs rob proceeds from saturday's peace rally in Cork

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday March 25, 2003 02:29author by Unamerican Chris Report this post to the editors

I suppose in ten years time we won't but should be watching the lastest tribunal that exposes Garda corruption, prevarication, intimidation and now down right theft. And not unlike the McBriaty case it is all spun out against a backround tapestry of a war. From the intimidation bully boy tactics shown to anyone around Shannon who actively doesn't support the American use of the deathport to the fact that at last Saturdays peace rally in Cork the Guardi stole the buckets of money raised by, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), the Cork Peace Alliance.

This was brought to my attention tonight by a friend who was at the rally. He reckoned hundreds if not more than a thousand Euros were robbed by criminal Guards. If anyone one can shine more light on this please comment below. If this is true I would humbly suggest that everyone who reads this and their friends go to the station in question or any other and ask to be told under what grounds and what authority the Guardi seized the charitable donations made to the Cork Peace Alliance.

To the Garda monitor reading this, listen up. This is really OTT lads. Are you all really that scared of us that you stoop to criminal activity to supress our voice. You should all be ashamed to wear the uniform. And you are right to be scared, because we are not afraid of your perceived power and when the so called normal people of Ireland learn of your dirty tactics campaign, and believe me we will make sure they do, you will hang your heads in shame for the American lapdogs some of you are.

Resist, Refuse, Reject. We will stop the warmongers! Come to Shannon
March 30th 2pm.

This was an absolute disgrace. It should be brought to the media's attention as much as possible. A radio morning talk show might pick up on it or something.

My girlfriend and some friends were there also, and they remember the Gardai taking the "money bucket" because they did not have a permit to collect money. (such is the law, so fair enough)
However they told me that the money was not confiscated, but returned after the march.
All they were doing was stopping the collection taking place.
There were some Sh*t stirrers screaming "the cops are taking the money" etc, but they after all did not have a permit, something that easily could have been arranged beforehand.
If I am incorrect, please let me know (without resorting to swearing and name-calling- which is the norm here), but as I understand it, the money was returned.

The money seized by the police was just over €1,000 and has not been returned to date.

The gardai waited until the last person had dropped their few bob into the buckets which by then were overflowing. Had they been serious about stopping a collection taking place they could have intervened twenty minutes earlier when the buckets were first produced (empty)and people asked to contribute.

This was a purely vindictive act by the gardai who are returning to their "heavy gang" tactics of the 1970s.

The money was collected by the broad-based Cork Anti-War Campaign, which also organised the march, and the last two marches in Cork.
