The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Umm Quassr Humanitarian Lies

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday March 26, 2003 00:25author by Maubere Report this post to the editors

The US claims it wants to bring humanitarian aid through the port of Umm Quassr. This is not the whole truth.

You might have heard George Bush and Tonto Blair carping on about getting humanitarian aid to Iraq. They say they have to "secure" the port town of Umm Quassr before they can starting bringing it in and the media like the loyal servants they are have been repeating this over and over again. However it happens to be complete rubbish. Sky News Military analyst Francis Jeffers said last Saturday that they could send the aid over land through Kuwait. They don't have to wait until Umm Quassr is captured they could bring it in the same way they brought in 150,000 troops and 10,000 vehicles!!! through the ports in Kuwait and over the border. They have chosen to shove all the aid agencies thru Umm Quassr because they interfere with their empire building plans if they went through the desert. This is how the New Scientist has described the situation "Over a million people in the embattled city of Basra in southern Iraq are facing a sixth day without access to clean water. Aid agencies are warning of a humanitarian catastrophe, with the malnourished population at risk of dehydration and disease, and United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan has appealed for water supplies to be restored". The electricity in Basra was cut last Friday, no info is available as to why this has happened. The British Army has claimed that Saddam Huessein turned off the water but given the fact that the "Allies" deliberatly bombed the water system (a war crime) during the 1st Gulf War they can't be ruled out either. The Red Cross has managed to get some other water supplies running but this is only enough for 40% of the population and the water is of a poor quality and not suitable for long term use. UNICEF has said "In Basra there is a very real possibility now of child deaths because of dehydration and diarrhoea. We estimate that 100,000 children under the age of five are now at risk," The Americans have chosen to block aid from getting to the Iraqi people because it might hinder their military campaign to "liberate" Iraq. How many Iraqi children will die horrible deaths because of this decision, who knows? but Bush and Blair and don't care.

The Brits are pissing themselves that the Shia will pour in from southern Iran to assist their relatives.

The word of the massacres from indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas of Basra is making a lot of young Iranian men and women want to go and fight the Invading British and American thieves so it might be um-pa-pa qasar for these chaps who cut their teeth shooting teenage joyriders in Belfast. Ah, sure we'll forget about them old war crimes, eh!
