The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Hackers cripple Al Jazeera sites

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday March 28, 2003 03:30author by Shakkow Report this post to the editors

Freedom of press under atack

As of a couple of hours ago users of the english Al Jazeera website have been re-directed to a site with an American flag with the words "Let freedom ring" emblazoned across it. The Arabic site users are being directed to a porn site. Jihad Ali Ballout, a spokesman for al-Jazeera described the attack as "a frontal, vicious attack on freedom of the press" and urged anyone with information about the hackers to contact authorities. He says that it will be a few weeks before the english language service will be able to resume.

"An Al Jazeera reporter stood up at a US Press Conference yesterday evening to make a statement"

A repulsive uniformed butcher on the podium had just publically and dishonestly had a go at al jazeera in a ludircrously hypocritical way, basically because they dared to cover events that the US armed forces did not want covered. There was no suggestion that Al Jazeera had been inaccurate, just that they were carrying material that the US didn't want shown. The al jazeera reporter present merely said that al jazeera was an independant media operation and would continue to report both sides of the story, more power to the man. Why the fuck shouldn't he? It's hardly as if what passes for the US media (HA!) would have given the al jazeera side any coverage otherwise (not that they did but that's a different story).

Incidentally, your peculiar objection to this statement is inaccurate, in that it was not a personal statement, it was an official al jazeera statement.

By the way, you and your ilk are apologists for butchers and are currently bathing in blood.

While Rupert Murdock's news remains so fair and even handed . . . Very few media sources are covering this whole episode in history in an impartial manner, few are relaying information without opinion or selective editing and dis-information. And when it comes down to it that is all is is, all people lost including soldiers who have bravely "fallen" will be remembered as statistics in a game. Those who survive - including us great screen monitoring mokeys - are now trying to align ourselves with which ever side we feel is right, or that which makes us feel most right. Media sources are no different, simply larger communities of the same, but most are also businesses, whether dealing in monetary profit or revelutionary gain, each has its views rooted in its people. Should you wish to change this you must influence those people and establish your stance, by rights you should only speak for yourself. The media is not fair, life is not fair . . . deal with it!

Al Jazeera are so unbalanced in their reporting that they remind me of Indymedia.ie. (ie the censorship of many many articles that don't suit the Indymedia controllers).

An Al Jazeera reporter stood up at a US Press Conference yesterday evening to make a statement. He had no question - he just wanted to exploit the opportunity to let his personal views be known. This is not professional conduct for a journalist. If a journalist wants to express their personal opinions they have plenty of ways of doing so - a press conference is not the forum. Hopefully he will be refused admittance to any more press conferences. If he doesnt want to report both sides of a story then there is no point in him attending.
