The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Snapshot of US warmongering public opinion

Can't believe the moderator of Poll at ireland.com today didn't delete this

from Ireland.com online poll comments. Poll is here : wonder will the moderator publish my comment mentioning Indymedia? I don't wonder actually. He won't. http://scripts.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/regularvote.cfm

No and they should not try. They should bomb Baghdad until it no longer exists. Nor should the USA care what lesser minds think of them. To the Anti-American, Anti-Israeli ranters I would like to remind you, you are not in charge of the worlds' morals, nor are you the spokespeople for humanity. In other words to the small minds who try to use big words and are arrogant enough not to know that anyone who reads at a 5th grade level or higher knows the same words, I would like to say in reality you are a pretty powerless bunch.

Do you really think the USA is going to consult with a bunch of malcontents like yourselves who have nothing better to do that post inane answers on this BB, responses which would cause you to flunk Jr. High in the USA, Do you really think the government of the biggest superpower in the world is going to consult with you before setting foreign policy? Do you really think you have any influence over the opinion of the American people? Dream on, malcontents, Dream on.

Poor bitter angry person. You would have so loved it in Berlin in '39, the speeches, pontificating madmen in shiny boots and the megalomania in the air like the sweet smell of cordite on the front as the dream of Lebensraum took flesh. "Der Fuhrer!Der Fuhrer! Der Fuhrer!" The happy chanting mindless masses and the proud patriotic gush oozing from the media.

However as most nazis found out spring of '45 was something altogether different as Berlin lay in ruins ostracized from the community of civilized nations. We wish you people luck but will not tolerate another nazi DREAM.

What's the difference between Herr Hitler and Hrerr Bush?

Herr Hitler wrote a book.

As Noam Chomsky has pointed out in a recent interview in “The Hindu” magazine, international polls show higher support for the war in the US than in other countries: now 50pc of the US believes that Iraq was
responsible for 9/11.

He points out that after 11 September the figure was around 3pc. This increase he says has come about after Sept. 2002 when the US government media propaganda campaign began.

The above comment from an Ireland.com poll reported in the above story “Snapshot of US....” is a reflection of this propaganda.

The interview “Iraq as Trial Run” can be found at:

I am sorry friend, but you are wrong. And God bless his heart, but Chomsky is wrong also.

There are actually MATERIAL reasons for Americans to back their Bush.

America has an extremely large middle class that benefits from imperialist exploitation.

The truth is a periodical and a mouse click away.

To assume that all these people are dupes is just incredulous.

When the false consciousness thesis starts to assume a brain-dead zombie as its average man something is wrong with the thesis.
