The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Bernadette McAliskey at anti war protest

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday April 08, 2003 19:29author by what i would give to kiss Bernadette's hand Report this post to the editors

The living legend and miracle that is Bernadette McAliskey attended the Anti war protest in belfast city center today. The very reverred Bernadette McAliskey joined anti-war protestors in Belfast city centre. Bernadette who survived a loyalist murder bid, after being shot and left for dead, knows all about the power of the state. What it can do to those who would dare question its policies.

Gorgeous Bernadette was looking vibrant as ever. Bernadette doesn't look a day older, and is alive and healthy, unlike some of the brit establishment military binky old boys who sanctioned and plotted the murder bid against her.

ah come on 'hail mary sore loser', this is the first generation who have had any choice about emigrating...you might not be "so downout and desperate to live in Dumbwar bush's land of milk and money" right now but wait till you and youre kids are on the dole for a decade and you might change your mind.

Bernadette was barred from entering the USA, but unlike yourself, Bernadette was only going to visit, not emigrate like yourself. Bernadette doesn't have to run away from economic or political problems. Bernadette stands and fights, she doesn't run away unlike some people (Mandy, bulldog reid, johnny adair and coco., Gordon Kerr etc).

You're just jealous because it's costing you loads of money to emigrate to the USA golden land of opportunity/rampant third world poverty. Unlike yourself, we are not all so downout and desperate to live in Dumbwar bush's the land of milk and money.

Now they'll probably bar Bernadette from the US. She's been invited by NYC Transport Workers Union, a living example of the industrial unionism principles of James Connolly. Howver some Irish Americans have never forgiven her for giving the key to the city of NY to the Black Panthers. She was given the freeedom of the city Mayor Linsley.

There has been a complaint submitted to the police ombudsman about the police brutality at the protest, in particular the treatment of Caoimhe. Also the police officer was I believe caught on Chinese Television or something dragging her by the hair.

Deirdre's freind who was dragged about by the hair was Caoimhe Butterly, an Irish activist who was shot by Israelis while working as a peace volunteer in Palestine.

She has since been arrested, and apparently charged.

Her daughter deirdre was man-handled by the peelers, and her friend was dragged away by her hair. Deirdre was ok, and was later able to give TG4 an interview, i'm not sure how her mate is.

Bernadette gave a great interview today for the BBC, in which she was asked about the heavy-handedness of the RUC. She replied that new "funny hats" don't constitute a new police force.
