The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Organize Against a US Imposed Peace

With the changing developments in Iraq activists need to keep up the pressure on the organizations in Irish society who are supposed to represent their member’s interests –the Government, the Political Parties, the Trade Unions/ICTU, the National Women’s Council and Women TD’s. We must telephone, send e-mails, write or fax them. We include the addresses of some ,pass this on to you friends, relatives, neighbours and work colleagues.

Politicians know the electorate can dump them. Let them know now our views on their support for this war and any US occupation of Iraq. You could get a petition signed on your road/estate and present it to your local TD’s calling for the Government to refuse to allow Shannon Airport to continue be used by the US Military in this war or any future wars and against a US occupation of Iraq. We must stand against a US imposed peace even if it rubberstamped by the UN.

The Women TD’s and Women Organizations who support the war, of those who have been silent and inactive should be left in no doubt about our views on the war. Opinion polls consistently show a majority of women are against the war.

The Trade Unions have stated their opposition to the war. In Spain this week there will be a short national work stoppage. The ICTU and Unions should produce literature for distribution in workplaces stating their unconditional solidarity with the people of Iraq and against the war and any US occupation. An immediate withdrawal of the US and British must take place.

We stand against US occupation of Iraq and for the Independence of Iraq. The people of Iraq are to pay three times – in blood during the invasion, again when the wealth of their country is raided to pay for the war and again when they pay for a ‘reconstruction’ that will swell the coffers of US corporations. We can expect that the US will use aid as a battle in ‘winning hearts and minds’ and that it will become a corrupting factor as the US moves to copper fasten its interests in the country.
Contact and lobby as many of the following as you can as a matter of urgency and oppose any US led occupation. Solidarity With the People of Iraq.
