The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

British Police Harass Observer Paul Hill and witnesses on route from Colombia - to Dublin

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday April 14, 2003 15:59author by as do many other British Police Report this post to the editors

April 14, 2003

Paul Hill and 4 of the witnesses (Catherine Murphy, Michelle Devlin, Ros
O'Sullivan and Laurence McKeown) for the Colombia Three trial were
travelling from Bogota to Dublin, via Madrid, and London.

When they arrived in Heathrow Airport the British Police took their
passports from them. They also took the passport of another unidentified
Irishman who they thought were part of the group. Paul Hill told them that
he was not part of the group and the policeman shrugged and said 'wrong
place, wrong time' and took the passport anyway. The Aer Lingus flight was
due to leave but the Captain waited 25 minutes and this ensured that the
delegation did not miss their flight.

Caitriona Ruane of the Bring Them Home Campaign said 'I have written a
letter to Brian Cowen, the Minister for Foreign Affairs informing him of
this harassment. We are calling on him to make a formal complaint to the
British Government to ensure that this does not happen again.'

Paul Hill one of the Observers at the trial in Colombia said 'This was
disgraceful behaviour by the British Police. We would like to thank the Aer
Lingus Captain and the stewardesses for their kindness and support'

think. what does "wrong place wrong time" mean when said in front of witnesses to Mr Paul Hill.
the husband of a member of the New England Kennedy family.
A man imprisoned for 14 years for a crime he didn't commit. A case which with the Birmingham 6 led to the most creative demonstrations in Dublin.
led to "concensus".

Just because the cops were found to have been crooked it doesn't mean they didn't have the right man. How do you know Hill wasn't in on it in the first place?

What proof do we have that you, Samm,y were not in on it. You seem to know a lot about it, I reckon you have something to hide.

Never about those murdered in the Woolich and Guilford bombings. Face it: Hill got off on a technicality.

Those members of the SP who occasionally, in moments of lucidity, wonder why their support north of the border makes the Workers Party look dynamic and credible, might ponder the effect the words of young comrades like Gregory Carson have on Nationalists.

How can anybody possibly think spending 14 years in jail equates to getting off on a technicality.

Hill and the others were the victims of a disgraceful miscarriage of justice and had they been any nationality but Irish they would have been let out much earlier.

Look by contrast at how easily Lee Clegg got off a murder charge ... where is the justice if you're an Irish nationalist?

Its more Lee Cleggs we need to rid the streets of scumbags who are making life a misery for most people. Most people means, for the benefit of you "anti" shitbags who dwell her, us, the silent majority.

These comments don't surprise me coming from bigots. One day the British forces will realise that injustices such as these serve no purpose in a modern democratic society. Violence breeds violence. There's a reason why bombs go off. Treating innocent people unjustly will only serve the purpose of escalating tensions between the two communities and giving terrorists a reason to terrorise. They can use this incident as justification of the claims that the police do not represent them. Surely those involved in the British Criminal Justice system now know that it is time for them to cop on to themselves. There are root causes to terrorism. How many more innocent people will have to die before people realise that.

Sounds like desperate rantings from a dying breed. Are youse looking forward to having Dublin as your capital and hurling as your national sport. Are you looking forward to marching on March17 and easter Sunday instead? Our day is coming and coming fast.Your beloved Brit govt are selling you out.

Well now, TPT, you put your finger on it! You say, and I quote,"theres a reason why bombs go off!"

You silly arseholes demand that no bomb go off in Iraq, but suggest it is ok for Paul Hill and his former mob to do it?

And please, dont give me the bullshit of innocence. Unsafe trial it was, but have a look at what hill and his crew were up to some time earlier than the Birmingham bombings. One of them blew himself up under a car in Manchester.
Innocent my Bollox.
