The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Vigil at Israeli Embassy This Weds at 7pm

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday April 14, 2003 22:33author by James Report this post to the editors

In case you werent aware: On March 16 2003, American civil protection volunteer Rachel Corrie was killed by an Israeli Army bulldozer while trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home at Rafah in the Gaza Strip. Rachel was the 22nd person to die in house demolitions in the Occupied Territories since February 2002. The IPSC is holding a vigil at the Israeli Embassy (Ballsbridge, Dublin) at 7pm on Wednesday 16th April to commemorate these innocent victims of the occupation. All welcome. Bring banners and flags. A paraqde will leave Central Bank Plaza at 6.15 to march to the vigil if you can make it. Also, the murderous Israeli "defence" forces shot another ISM member in the head a few days ago as he tried to rescue two children from these depraved psychos. What have the pro zionists to say now?? What possible justification is there for this????Bet we wont

First of all, take a look at the bloody calander before planning your demo/vigil. OK, MAYBE they will be in the building holding a "seder" there instead of all off being guests at the seders of Irish Jews (I believe there are at least a few Jews in Dublin). Having guests or being guests is part of the observance.

Or was that your intent? (to be doing your demo/vigil when you KNEW all that would be going on is a religious observance).

Yeah, I know, you're probably the sort who believes that the matzot are made with the blood of murdered children. And that the start of Pesach makes an appropriate time to protest.

passover - a holiday of liberation- is a very appropriate time to be speaking of murdered freedom fighters of all religons and nationalities. In the time that I spent in the West Bank I never noticed the Israeli military softening its operations out of respect for Muslim or Christian holidays and I would be very interrested to see what the Palestinian body count is during the 8 days of passover in light of the current rate of IDF assault.

It is very convenient to label all protest of Israel anti semetic and thus attempt to reduce issues of justice to ethnic and/or religous ones but it is you who is making this connection (at great disservice to the rest of us). I rather doubt the organizers of this demonstration realized the timing but if they did then it was a brilliant and poignant move.

I for one plan to follow their lead and raise the issue of freedom for Palestine at my own family seder. To do anything else during this holiday which commemorates the lifting of the great oppression of an entire people while Israel has its foot ever deeper into the throats of the Palestinians whould be hypocrisy of the most disgusting kind.

`thou shall not stand idly by'. this is the principle for which the murdered and maimed members of the International Solidaty Movement died for and it would do all of us good to learn a lesson from this - no better time than during Passover.
free Palestine!

I am not James and did not post this article. Strange as it may seem I am not in a minority of one when it comes to being critical of Israels policies.

Your attempt to discredit people posting articles critical of Israel is pathetic and will fail so don't waste your time. Spend it rather on trying to influence your government into making a just peace for you the Palestinians and your respective children.

By the way I welcome the initiative and vigil and will be attending. It is never too soon to stop murder, oppression and ethnic cleansing.

Explain to me and explain to the Israelis excatly how you managed to settle the "intertribal" conflict on your own little island. Explain to me how you manage to live at peace together with a "one state solution". Last time I checked you were STILL divided and it's been how many years now?

Sorry if that seems resentful but I can't help it. You folks should maybe figure out how to do it yourselves before being so ready to give others advice. Ethnic conflicts tend to be intractable.

We have a ceasefire since 1995 and an elected parliment in the North drawn from both sides. They still disagree for sure, but they use words now, not weapons. I think many in Israel and in Palestine would be delighted if they were in this position. So yes, I do believe we have something we can teach the world.
