The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Are Protestors Terrorists?

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday April 24, 2003 14:21author by Deirdre de Burca - Green Partyauthor email deburcad at gofree dot indigo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Exchanging information on terrorists or protestors

The Spanish Presidency of the EU seems determined to push through a proposal to "exchange information on incidents caused by violent radical groups with terrorist links"

The EU definition of terrorism includes: "violence and criminal damage orchestrated by radical extremists groups, clearly terrorising society, to which the Union has reacted by including such acts in Article 1 of the Framework Decision on combating terrorism"

"orchestrated by radical extremists groups, clearly terrorising society."

So the message is clear. Keep the protests peaceful. Don't destroy things. Don't threaten police or uniformed service members. Don't attack people or burn things.

Unfortunately, some protesters have a problem with these comcepts.

According to the unlamented Thatcher Nelson Mandela was a terrorist. The banning of the Basque Nationalist Party Herri Batasuna is an attack on democratic rights. Whether people like them or not they were elected.
Hitler got his majority by getting the Communist Party banned. With their elimination he had a majority. (He never won a free election).
There are many here who would love to ban Sinn Fein.
They usually start with an unpopular minority and work on from there. If an excuse is not provided one can be created.Look at the over the top demands that the Greens denounce the Sahhnon events.

Keep to your designated sheep pens miles away from your rulers.

Do not even look cross ways at the phalanx of armoured cops

Be prepared to be attacked with dogs, batons, pepper spray, gas, rubber/plastic bullets, water cannon, stun guns.

Do not expect your legal attackers to be identified by any number, or for their faces to be unmasked (don't even think about masking yourself!)

Be prepared for arrest following beating for "violence"

Be prepared for trial by media

Unfortunately some bystanders do not have a problem with these concepts

different situations call for different types of actions, but the problem here is that there are some serious moves to crushing all dissent and protest. this is very worrying stuff.

the problem with the anti-capitalist/anti-globalisation protests so far is that firstly, not everyone can afford or is willing to travel the world to engage in these actions. since (and before) Seattle, I think they have been very important--- and, whatever has happened so far, the term 'terrorism' is surely wrong ---but as governments begin to clamp down and illegalise these protests, more effort must go into bringing 'anti-capitalism'/'anti-globalization' into our localities and communities. 'Terrorism', as I understand it, is a method which seeks to 'terrorise' society; the anti-capitalist movement, and particularly its anarchist and anarchistic players, are there to strengthen society against state and corporate elites.

Unfortunately, because most people only know about this movement through the corporate and state media, this movement is--- obviously, I suppose ---subject to misrepresentation. the only solution to this, as far as I can tell, is to bring the movement home, to use the broad alliance of groups involved to begin creating visible community-serving, society-strengthening alternatives: not for any alterior motives, I should point out, it is--- it should be ---an end in itself.

Anarchists potentially have the most to contribute to this task, and except for those solely seeking to build their parties or 'convert' people, I think they may have many allies should the immediate goals and long-term aspirations be made clear and open. Role on the Irish Social Forum.

They will probably allow you to continue to talk about the fence and even write about the fence. If you like you can even chant about the fence. Just don't go near it.

If you accept and even promote this clear dividing line then you'll be OK. So there is no real danger here for the Irish Green Party or for most of the Irish left. The government are merely confiming the divisions you have already drawn.

They don't want to take away your megaphone or your stewards bibs. They understand that allowing people a little space to let off steam works much better then trying to outlaw dissent.

Just stay away from the fence.

OK.

= I don't think Iosaf's "habit of filling the newswire with personal musings which are incomprehensible to anybody else." are in any way counter productive.

= I also find most of them to be reasonably comprehensible.

This same piece of "news" occurs two pages down the newswire here: http://www.indymedia.ie/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=44632&start=20

Why so far down you ask?

Ah, it's because a small number of people using indymedia are happy to post whatever they feel like without regard for the rest of the community.

Thanks Deirdre.

In Dodgson's book, "Alice in Wonderland" was a wonderful hookah smoking caterpillar who informed Alice that "The word means what I say it does. No more and no less." Mainstream politicians are wildly re-defining the term "terrorist". Even the vandalising, hate-shouting types of demonstrators (which can be as often right-wing as left) aren't really any more than an irritation. But if they were to attempt to formulate laws against people being irritating little vandals they'd be laughed at by everybody.

And these absurd laws they're bringing up should be receiving the same treatment.

It's a short step from smashing windows and burning cars to planting explosives. There have been many anti-capitalist terror gangs such as Red Army faction, Baader Meinhof, November 17 and there is currently a Communist terrorism campaign in India.

I've got to say, Marxism is an evil creed that thrives on hatred and envy.
