The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Blair suspends NI elections/democrasy to save master lickel davy trimbull

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday May 03, 2003 23:04author by Cleo Report this post to the editors

How would the british public like it, if Blair suspended his own UK national elections just because he thought New labour/old tories wouldn't do well in them?? In a shocking bare faced display of election manipulation, Blair once again exposes his brit colonial overlord mannerisms by pulling the rug from under the assembly elections and denying democrasy to the northern irish public.

I have to agree with the DUP on this one, and to support their legal challenge against Blair's illegal election engeneering on behalf of lickle davy trunchbull even though the DUP are not my cup of tea. The brits can't just run off with the ball when the game isn't going their way, just because their prize player lickel davy trunchbull is about to be sent off. Thats not what democrasy is about, election engineering and stacking the odds in teacher's pet lickel davy trunchbulls favour. Blair is once again proving that northern ireland is on parr with other colonial tinpot third world junta outposts, where democrasy/elections can be suspended at the drop of a hat, according to the whims/favours of el presidente. We're not living in the last century, brits like tiny tony need to change their abhorrent snobby brit overlord mentality and move out of the dark ages. Tony can't preach to northern Irish people about abandoning paramilitarism if there are no political outlets/pathways in place to replace paramilitarism. We have to remember for many years paramilitaries have represented and protected their working class loyalist and republican communities, Tony suspending our political structures/escape from paramilitarism, will only drive ordinary people back to paramilitaries to represent them. Northern irish people will have no choice but to turn to paramilitaries to get their views/message across to the brits. Protest against Tony's blatant election engineering and manipulation on the 29th May.

Thanks 'Other', for a while there I thought I was on my own - imagine how disappointed I was after my Zionist controllers told me I would meet lots of nice people on Indymedia if only i would be one of their 'hackling personae'? Whatever that is. Any suggestions?

MIDDLE CLASSES?!
i'd say the working classes were far more affected by the struggle for equal rights up north...

I think its great Tony suspending democrasy, political pathways and elections. Its just what i wanted, paramilitaries were going out of vogue there for a while, as ordinary people turned to politicians and the political process to represent them, but thanks to Tony thats been stopped for once and for all. Cheers Tony, you've given local paramilitaries a well deserved long awaited boost. Hopefully now paramilitary power and violence will spiral out of control once again, to fill the political vacuum created by Blair and trunchbull. Looking forward to getting back to the good old days, of widespread car bombs, hijackings, PSNI no go areas, communities in turmoil, you ain't seen nufink yet Tony.

Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin

May 1, 2003

"Who is in charge in the Six Counties? Obviously, it is the English Government and that government alone. The Dublin Administration wants an election to Stormont; so do the SDLP, the DUP, the Provos and all the other Stormont parties, except the UUP."

"What Irish people want doesn't matter. It is what the British government decides that counts. So much for alleged democracy and the current process. The wishes of the Irish people count for nothing while the British establishment rules the roost."

"I seem to recall the exclusion of anti agreement partys in the elections RSF amongst others. Have i got this right"

Kind of. RSF were planning to field around 30 candidates in the 1989 local elections but could not do so because of a political test oath imposed by Thatcher shortly beforehand. The oath would have meant a repudiation of the right of the Irish people to use force of arms to end British occupation. Republicans have never accepted any Oaths of allegiance as they legitimise British rule in Ireland and criminalise Irish resistance to that rule. The Oath is still in effect in the 6 counties today which is ironic considering Blair's own recent use of violence for political ends in Iraq.

Political test oath

"I declare that, if elected, I will not by word or deed express support for or approval of --
(a) any organisation that is for the time being a proscribed organisation specified in Schedule 2 to the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act 1978: or
(b) acts of terrorism (that is to say, violence for political ends) connected with the affairs of Northern Ireland."

Cleo,
You say that paramilitaries for years 'represented and protected' working class communities? Oh really? Well a fine fucking job they made of it didn't they? I suppose thats why the graveyards and prisonyards were stuffed to the gills with the middle classes.
I agree with you about the suspension of the elections, but you have yer head up yer arse about the paramilitaries.
