The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Buddhafield Ireland 2003: date for your diary!

Meditation - ritual - bodywork
Practice in nature in a Celtic context
Children-friendly retreat

Buddhafield Ireland 2003 will take place at the Grove of
Sinann, Leitrim, from Friday August 15th to Monday
August 18th, bringing together Buddhist meditation, ritual
and bodywork for a camping retreat in the magical
indigenous context of the Grove. The weekend will be
dedicated to spiritual practice connecting body, emotions
and mind with the world outside ourselves - human,
natural and other!

Buddhafield Ireland is dedicated to extending spiritual
practice into all reaches of our being. In meditation, we
develop awareness of our own bodies and breath and a
welcoming friendliness towards ourselves and all living
beings. In ritual, we use body, speech and mind to
engage our emotions for the task of transformation. With
bodywork, we explore the different aspects of our
physical experience.

This practice takes place in a broader context: in the hills
and woods of summer Leitrim, in the physical experience
of camping and practicing in the open air, in the pagan
environment of the Grove of Sinann
, and in what we believe is the first
child-friendly Buddhist retreat to be held in Ireland, with
childcare facilities provided.

The retreat is suitable for beginners as well as more
experienced meditators. Food will be vegetarian and
based as far as possible on organic and local produce.
The retreat will last from dinner on the Friday until the
afternoon of the Monday. Buddhafield Ireland is a non-
profit organisation, and fees will be set accordingly.
Booking details will be available later in the year. If you
wish to be kept informed, please contact Penny
Iremonger at or tel. (01)
2194888.
