The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Nuclear Proliferation continues as a Global Threat

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday May 10, 2003 10:49author by Avi H. Report this post to the editors

According to recent statements by Mohamed ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the global nuclear arms control regime is under stress.

In 2005, there will be a conference reviewing the progress of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, there seems little prospect of untrustworthy, totalitarian states with nuclear ambitions not developing them. Further, the possibility that terrorists might obtain nuclear weapons would seem to be increasing in magnitude, not decreasing. This is particularly alarming as terrorists are much more likely to use such horrific weapons than nation states.

Anyone who threatens to use nuclear weapons is threatening thousands, perhaps millions or even billions of people with mass-extermination. That's what nukes do whether they are in the possession of "friendly powers" or so-called "rogue-states" or "terrorists" even.

Avi, I agree with you that nuclear weapons continue to be a grave threat to the world. But its because nukes are inherently bad, not because someone rotten might try to use them for the wrong reason (there is no "right reason" -- see the International Court of Justice opinion on nukes of 1996!).

Here in Ireland we need to stop the nuclear weapons work at HP/Compaq in Galway (Google keywords: HP galway nuclear weapons). We need to support the nuclear whistle-blowers here and elsewhere (like Mordechai Vanunu in Israel) too.

This is located in Cumbria England on the Irish Sea.
Effluent from this reprocessing plant effects the people of the Irish Sea, who comprise the "Irish Sea Community".

I really must congratulate you Avi, on your opposition to nuclear proliferation. Nuclear weapons are a major threat to humankind. Did you consult with Mordechai Vanunu before publishing the above very worthy article? Did you visit him in his cell? Do you support the visit of Hans Blix and co. to Dimona? Do you believe that trustworthy non-totalitarian states should possess nuclear weapons? Can you tell visitors to the site who supplied the Zionist racists with the technology and materials to produce at least 200 nuclear weapons? Guess the name of the only country to use nuclear weapons?
Finally, a piece of friendly advice, PULL THE OTHER ONE!!!!

Avi you must be getting paid to do this.
And quite frankly you are wasting your time, don't you have something better to do with your life ?

You have consistently refused to make any comment on Israel's (not so secret) nuclear programme and the disgraceful treatment of Mordechai Vanunu by your government and the shady spooks behind it.

And you think that anyone is going to take the agenda-driven drivel you repost here seriously ......?

What a sad bastard you are ..... why don't you go out and get a proper job ...

"Over the years the case of Mordechai Vanunu has come to symbolize the intractable problem of state secrecy that continues to stymie all efforts toward world nuclear disarmament. This is why Vanunu has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year since1987. Though his name is a household word in Europe, Australia, and throughout much of the rest of the world, here in America Vanunu remains almost unknown. The US press ignores his case because it is an embarrassment to Israel and to the US government."

The US and Israel are 'the very untrustworthy nations' that have been going around poking nuclear warheads in everyones faces since they got them. Six times Israel alone has been on nuclear red-alert, and the US has used the nuclear threat (not forgetting that they hold the distinction of being the only nation to nuke Anyone-EVER) against countries like Uruguay 1947, peurto-rico 1950, korea 1950, vietnam 1954, guatemala 1954, ah it just goes on and on...
