The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Greg Rollins Still Held In Israeli Jail 11 Days

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday May 31, 2003 05:27author by Holy Mutter - New Profileauthor email newprofile at speedy dot co dot il Report this post to the editors

Don't Look Any Further Than Ramle Prison For Another Hostage For Peace

It has been reported that the US Embassy received "creditable reports" and warnings about plans to kidnap US citizens in Gaza. ARE THEY FINALLY BEGINNING TO NOTICE.... THE IDF?

Greg Rolins (Surrey, BC) is still in Ramle Prison. He has no charges against him. It has now been 11 days.

This is yet another outrage perpetuated by Israel while at the same time proclaiming the security of internationals is threatened.

Indeed it is. But .....by whom is the question with an answer that seems to point directly to the IDF.

It has also been reported that the US Embassy received "creditable reports" and warnings about plans to kidnap US citizens in Gaza.

DO THEY FINALLY BEGIN TO NOTICE.... THE IDF?

Meanwhile, Judge Sharon ben Shmuel, head of the administrative tribunal for deportations, met with Rollins' lawyer and presented the conditions
the Interior Ministry wants to place on Rollins for his release.

She ruled that she accepts these conditions for Rollins' release, which include a requirement that he leave the country by June 5, when his original visa expires.

This afternoon, Rollins' lawyers received a ruling from the Israeli High Court permitting Rollins to remain in the country until the High
Court hears his petition.

His petition challenges the policy restricting foreigners from "Area A"--formerly controlled by the Palestinian Authority--and his arrest under that policy.

The High Court gave the government seven days to respond to his petition. The seven days ended today.

Rollins' lawyers will ask the High Court to decide on conditions for Rollins' release, and will inquire as to whether the government responded to Rollins' initial petition.

A thirteen-member CPT delegation began by meeting today with Rabbisfor Human Rights, B'tselem (Israeli monitors of human rights in the Occupied Territories), and Bat Shalom (Israeli women's peace group.)

One of the delegates, Colin Stuart, was delayed at Ben Gurion airport for about seven hours until he wrote and signed this statement:

"I understand if I enter the occupied territories without permission of the IDF I do so at my own risk of possible deportation and refusal of re-entry for ten years."

CPTer Eric Schiller and delegate Colin Stuart (both of Ottawa ON) spoke at a press conference in Jerusalem set up by the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions in order to call attention to the new restrictions on internationals in the Occupied Territories. Also speaking at the press conference were Palestinians whose homes have been demolished and representatives of international and Israeli peace groups.

The press conference highlighted the threat to Palestinians that is implicit in the recent attempts by the Israeli government to restrict human rights monitors from the Occupied Territories.

The Hebron team hosted several journalists from US newspapers who were interested in reporting on the recent attempts by the Israeli military to restrict human rights groups.
