The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

URGENT ACTION: Israel Refuses to allow Palestinian Special Olymic Team leave Palestine.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday June 12, 2003 09:12author by Sean Report this post to the editors

Please note that the Israeli have closed the borders to travel by Palestinians and today refused to allow representatives of the Palestinian young people taking part in the Special Olympics to travel out of Palestine.

Please note that the Israeli have closed the borders to travel by Palestinians and today refused to allow representatives of the Palestinian young people taking part in the Special Olympics to travel out of Palestine.

Please express your concern to the Israeli Embassy in Dublin about the fact that these special young people may not be allowed to compete in these games, the first time they have ever been held in Ireland, the first time they have ever been held outside the USA.

If you have contact with friends or groups in the USA please ask them to do likewise. The telephone number of the Israeli Embassy is 00353 1 6680303 or email them at
info@dublin.mfa.gov.il

Meanwhile it appears that the Palestinian arrested by Immigration police at Dublin Airport early on Tuesday and forced to spend the night in Mountjoy Prison has been handed over to Immigration Police again for apparent deportation.

Mr Shadi Abbas, a Palestinian with Jordanian citizenship, was detained at Dublin Airport early on Tuesday morning.

He was travelling on a legitimate business visa issued by the Irish Embassy in Egypt. He also has a letter from his employer in Jordan stating his business.

He was arrested by immigration in Dublin because of the fact that he had been deported from the UK last year over a visa violation (overstaying his stay).

When initially contacted by friends the police were very rude and claimed that he had already been deported.
This proved to be false.

Mr Abbas had broken no law in Ireland and had no charges against him from any other country. He was visiting Ireland on legitimate business. His deportation should be protested in the strongest terms to the Irish Minister or Justice, Michael McDowell,

Sean, do you have a source or more information about the Special Olympics athletes. I'm trying to follow up the story, but I can't find anything about it on the Internet...

Cheers.

I´m trying to do the same (to write something up in Irish) but I can´t find more info although I can vouch that the source is accurate.
I´ll see if I can get more info and post it.

Is it Kilkenny that the Palestinian team are supposed to be staying?

I found a small story about it in today's Irish Times. I think the Palestine team is staying in Kinsale, Co Cork. The IT says four of Palestine's 17 athletes are "stranded" in the Gaza Strip and Israel cannot guarantee that they will be allowed to leave.

There was a news story last evening on 5-7 live on Radio 1 about it. It included an interview with a Palestinian guy living here who is a volunteer to help with their team when they arrive. Also an interview with someone from the welcome committee in Kinsale.

You should be able to get it on the archive section of the RTE news site.

Please keep us updated. I will circulate the contact details you put up about protests.
