Bleedin' Bertie and his plane

category dublin | miscellaneous | opinion/analysis author Monday June 30, 2003 17:49author by Mags Report this post to the editors

Amazing what you see in Dublin on a Sunday evening. Just wondering if any quick thinking camera person from indymedia saw it too or got a pic?

I was in Dublin city centre with a few people yesterday evening just as the closing ceremony for the Special Olympics was taking place in Croke Park. There was a plane flying overhead with a banner trailing from it and it said 'Thank You Bertie'. No name of any organisation.

Isn't that nice - some citizens think so much of our Dear Leader that they will hire a plane to let him know, rather than just making a phone call. A cynic might just suspect that it was a Fianna Fail ploy to boost Bertie.

But not me. We all love Mr Ahern, none more so that the people with Special Needs who are being chucked out of their sheltered workshops and education projects due to government cutbacks.

at the opening ceremony, it's nice to see that we all love him again. A funny thing that I noticed in the paper the other day was a government TD making a heartfelt plea to the opposition 'not to make political capital' from the special olympics. Apparently the sneaky opposition were using the event to highlight the lack of funding to disability groups - how dare they. On the other hand, all the government were doing was getting a million political photo-ops with smiling disabled kids, happy to be ruled by such a kind man as Bertie.

As Goebbels said, acuse your enemy of what you are doing yourself.

Stephen Boyd said it!

They also kidnapped those missing Special Olympic athletes. Right now they are slaving away in a SP factory turning out union jacks, orange sashes, bunting and banners.

They did great in the Special Olympics. Oisin won gold in the mental gymnastics, Finghin got gold in the back flip.

A slight update. Todays Evening Herald (Tuesday) has a touching appeal from Berties big brother appealing for people to stop booing him. So far there has been...

• Ireland V Georgia game
• Special Olympics Opening Ceremony
• Dublin V Derry game in Clones

Yiz know what to do..... :)

could Bertie be the first little rascal to be forced into public tears of shame and embarresment?

The capacity to feel shame is a serious political liability. I don't think you reach cabinet level with that kind of weakness.

heard on the street that it was Ozzie Kilkenny (U2's accountant). Is this an example of the kind of activism that Bono was going on about recently?
