The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

offsite link Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Saoránaigh agus Dualgasaí

category national | miscellaneous | opinion/analysis author Wednesday July 16, 2003 15:37author by Seán Report this post to the editors

AN DRAOI RUA discusses the merits of a citizen as opposed to the attitude of a consumer and the roles that people take within society. This piece was inspired by Scott Ritter, the American ex-arms inspector for the UN, who spoke in Galway recently.

Bhí Scott Ritter, an t-iarchigire airm ó na Stáit Aontaithe, ag caint ag cruinniú póiblí i nGaillimh 3 Iúil. Bhí sé ina bhall den Pháirtí Phoblachtánach agus chaith sé tréimhse sna 'Marines' chomh maith. D'ainneoin a chúlra choiméadach, thug sé oráid suimiúil ar cheiliúradh SAM 4 Iúil, 'Lá an Neamhspléachais' agus cad is brí lena leithéid dó féin go pearsanta.

Mar chúlra na hocáide, ba mhaith liom a léíriú go raibh an t-Uasal Ritter in Éirinn ar mhaithe le fianaise a thabhairt i gcás cúirte Mary Kelly a bhí cúisithe as damáiste 1.5 milliún euro a dhéanamh d'eitleán Mheiriceánach. Ag caint ar an ábhar seo, chuir Ritter eachtra Mary Kelly i gcompáraid le Gearmánach ag déanamh ionsaí ar traen lán de Ghiúdaigh ar a bhealach chuig sluachampa lena marú le linn an dara chogadh domhanda.

Cuireadh an dlí ar Mary Kelly i gCill Rois, i gContae an Chláir seachtain ó shin ach níor éirigh leis an giúiré a bheith aontaithe ar a cás. Mothaíonn sí go bhfuil faoiseamh éigin tugtha di óir tugadh treoir don ghiúiré breithiúnas ciontach a thabhairt. Níl sí go hiomlán slán go fóill óir tá seans ann go mbeidh atriail ann san fhómhair.
