We are facing a radical agenda set by the progressive wing of the educational establishment, says Dr Stephen Curran. We should build on the past 14 years' foundation, not tear it down.

Jewish activists opposing the Israeli government's colonization policies face intimidation and harassment via email and on the internet, according to an article by Brian Whitaker in today's Guardian.
Deborah Fink is a singer and music teacher living in London. She is also Jewish. Last month, out of the blue, she received a deluge of hateful emails - more than 150 in the space of a week.
One came from a rabbi in New York, informing her: "Your soul, my dear, is petrified and lost." Another said, menacingly: "Hitler killed the wrong Jews."
Yet another - ostensibly from a Jewish doctor of medicine in the US - elaborated on the Holocaust theme. "Too bad Hitler didn't get your family," it said. "With six million Jews dieing [sic] 60 year [sic] ago it's a shame scum like you somehow managed to survive."
What, exactly, had Ms Fink done to deserve this vitriol? The short answer is that she had been planning to sing. Ms Fink is a member of Just Peace UK, a mainly, but not exclusively, Jewish group opposing the Israeli occupation and seeking "a viable and sovereign Palestinian state alongside a safe and secure Israel, with Jerusalem as the shared capital of both states". Just before Christmas, she helped to organise an alternative carol concert in Trafalgar Square, at which traditional Christmas songs were sung with new words. One of them went like this:
Oh little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie.
A wall is laid where tourists stayed,
And tanks go rolling by ...

There are now several Indian communities that have lodged complaints against Coca-Cola factories. The most celebrated of these is the Plachimada village in Kerala state, home of one of Coca-Cola's biggest bottling plants in India. This was one of the first villages to allege that the plant was draining water from wells, drying up ponds and destroying the livelihood of more than 2,000 farm families.
Researchers found that the plant had drilled 65 bore holes into the ground, siphoning off a million gallons of water a day. In addition, they also found that Coke was washing bottles with chemicals which were then released, without treatment, into local ground water. British NGO Actionaid has investigated the village and concluded that it was a thriving agricultural community until the arrival of the bottling plant in 1998. Under pressure from activists, 300 of whom were arrested during various protests, the local panchayet announced that it would cancel the plant's operating license.

The BCN council was asked by local youth groups in this area which suffered exceptionally high rates of unemployment to provide a community space in 1987. The council delayed, and those groups thus occupied the site. Where they have remained since.

They developed a non heirarchial autonomous space open to all over the years since and have since the end of 2003 expected their eviction which only serves to continue the present drive to urban speculation in the Greater Barcelona area which has seen the cost of living space suffer the sharpest increases in the European Union.

"CAIRO, Dec. 30 — The French government and the leader of the Muslim world's most prestigious center of Sunni Islamic learning found common ground on Tuesday on a contentious French proposal that would stop Muslim girls from wearing head scarves in French state schools.
The grand sheik of Al Azhar, Muhammad Sayed Tantawi, told reporters that although wearing the head scarf, or hijab, was a religious duty, governments of non-Muslim countries had the right to pass any laws they liked.
He said this applied even on dress codes.
He spoke before talks in Cairo with the French interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, who assured him that France guarantees its Muslim citizens freedom to practice their religion."

CIA: Iraq at risk of civil war
The warning, at odds with Bush's upbeat view, was delivered this week to Washington. His aides are pushing to save a transition plan.
By Warren P. Strobel and Jonathan S. Landay
Inquirer Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - CIA officers in Iraq are warning that the country may be on a path to civil war, current and former U.S. officials said yesterday, starkly contradicting the upbeat assessment that President Bush gave in his State of the Union address.
The CIA officers' bleak assessment was delivered orally to Washington this week, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the classified information involved.
The warning echoed growing fears that Iraq's Shiite majority, which has until now grudgingly accepted the U.S. occupation, could turn to violence if its demands for direct elections are spurned.

which has now been published in the Peninsular press, as part of the Spanish 2004 general elections.
The leader of the Spanish opposition has declared that if he doesn't get more votes than Rajoy (Aznar's appointee) he will not be president.
This was a very clever move and excellent politics. But it doesn't look good on his CV yet.
Anyway the general gist is:-
No More PP.
and incidently whilst we are all @ it
no more Bush
no more Burlusconi (with or without the facelift).
across two pages from the Secretary General of the Catalan Party CiU.
The Party which ruled Catalonia for 23 years.
The Party that no longer rules Catalonia.
The Party that has 23 new members in parliament, has issued on the 23rd day of January a letter to Señor Aznar.
long overdue.
So we know the tripartite government opposes and opposed Aznar. CiU however gave us "Aznar the mediator" in a hotel room years and years ago in the first term of the popular Spanish President who really doesn't seem to go.
He's been touring the world saying "goodbye" for about four months now, and no doubt will tour the world afterwards full of "quasi-crypto-Thatcherite shite" long after.
Oh Mr Aznar, I must admit I never liked you, and let's be honest you really don't like us.
But the problem is there really are so many people who you don't like.
So the CiU adjusting to their new found role in :opposition: to the tripartite perhaps "have to" wave the little flag a bit more...
the letter:
from senor Josep Antoni Duran Lleida to
Señor Jose Maria Aznar.
seems to say:-
1. no coalition with PP this time.
2. more than one way to do the Basque.
3. we don't like you Mr aznar. and there will be no more PP & one thing we all appear to be sure of is there will be more "catalúnya".
whatever that means.
