It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Goverment ban DGN march - protest GPO 6pm Saturday

category dublin | summit mobilisations | news report author Friday April 30, 2004 11:56author by Joe Report this post to the editors

Gardai plans as revealed on Primetime last night show that the government has decided to effectively ban the Dublin Grassroots Network march on Farmleigh. Organisers have reacted by calling a protest against the ban for 6pm Saturday at the GPO on O’Connell st. This is the same time as the original march was due to start.

Last nights Primetime revealed that the Gardai have been ordered to occupy the march assembly point (Parkgate st) with riot police. It also revealed that any attempt to march down the quays to this point will be attacked by uniformed Gardai at each bridge in order to try and reduce the numbers on the march and that any who made it to Park Gate street will be attacked by the riot squad.

The government is too smart to publicly declare that the march is banned but if it has ordered Gardai to attack people who even try to assemble to march. This clearly constitutes a de facto ban but one the government are afraid to honesty announce.

This march was too be a peaceful but noisy demonstration to Farmleigh house where the EU leaders are meeting. Protest the ban, turn up at the GPO on O’Connell st, Saturday at 6pm

well done ruairi on putting courage and ban in the same sentence. a ban is a cowardly act, used to prevent undesirable consequences - hardly something that id call courageous.
this is a prime example of how the right to have a dissenting voice no longer exists in fascistic police state ireland. im surprised youre not campaigning against the enlargement of the EU, or working on the vote yes campaign. youre not fit to write traffic reports for the Star ruairi, you should be ashamed of yourself

Just to remind you this is supposedly a democracy and we have the right to march.its enshrined in the constitution of this beautiful land.
You should try opening your eyes and mind a little man.youre exactly the kind of person that allows the Government to viloate civil liberties and get away with it.
This ban can only bring trouble, exactly what the fuckers want.
Of course you lack the insight to realise that.
Pathetic

Excellent news. The streets of our city will be crowded enough without a few 100 deluded 'grassroots muppets.' Fair play to whoever had the courage to ban the march, protest at the GPO all you want-no one will notice you!!

All the other events over the weekend (incl. AEIP carnival) are as we far I know to go ahead as planned. See the web page for the listing of them.

The first is a Critical Mass starting at 5.30pm tonight from Parnell square. Turn up even if you do now have bike, we need a big show of numbers in reaction to this ban.
