The Crown Prosecution Service is appealing against the acquittal of Hamit Coskun, who was convicted of burning the Quran in a protest, reigniting fears Britain could introduce blasphemy laws by the back door.

World Kindness Day may have passed you by. But it won't have passed by your children, whose school will have been sure to teach that climate action and open borders are essential elements of 'kindness', says Steven Tucker.

DEBRIEFING BUSH VISIT-Peace Camp, Bike Ride, MacBush, AWI Fri Shannon Demo, AmBush of Press Bus!

Exploring Proposal to Return to Shannon Airport with NVDA late Sept (anniv' US Blitzing Afghanistan)

" I will tell you something about stories", he said
"They just aren't entertainment
Don't be fooled
They are all we have, you see,
all we have to fight off illness and death.
You don't have anything
if you don't have stories
Their evil is mighty
but it can't stand up to our stories,
So they try to destroy the stories
let the stories be confused or forgotten,
They would like that
They would be happy
Because we would be defenseless then....."
-Leslie Marmon Silko, Native American

SHARED REFLECTIONS FROM THE BUSH VISIT.

Shared stories of hope and resistance from the Bike Ride, Peace Camp, MacBush, AWI Fri Night Demo at Shannon on Bush's arrival, the Blockade of the Press Pack that delayed Bush's departure and arrival in Turkey.

We will also be looking at a proposal to return to Shannon Airport in late September around the anniversary of the 9/11 attack on New York and the 24/7 U.S. attack on Afghanistan that followed.

This proposal emerged from the NVDA workshop at the weekend with Star Hawk that followed the Bush visit. We hope it to be the begining of a cylcle of nonviolent resistance at Shannon Airport where 10,000 U.S. military pass through each month.

Until the Bush visit provided the context (lights, cameras, action, cast of thousands) there hadn't been a significant protest at Shannon Airport by the Irish peace movement this year. The last two mobilisations by the libertarian movement in Ireland have both been in response to stages being set by the state (May Day, Bush visit). It's time to nonviolently take the initiative!

If you can come on Sunday to report on what you were ionvolved in give us a text so we can put out another posting with specific speakers.
Thanx

Hello Ciaron and all,
Unfortunately I cannot be in Dublin on 18th but I support the objectives of
what you are trying to achieve. I will try and give you a written account of
my own involvement in the Peace CAmp and experiences on the Shannon Estuary
in the meantime. The peace camp was far more successful than many
anticipated. It provided both a gathering point or points, and a focus, for
a specific group of people, who were dedicated to positive non-violent
protest. Their successes far outhweigh their numbers. The peace camp also
provided a focal point for the media and for the general public. The IAWM
strategy of one large protest march along a route defined by the Gardai
failed this time as it failed in the past. Their strategy of "a mass
movement" behaving like sheep appears to work at times, such as 15th Feb
2003, but the reality is that the Government ignored that 100,000 march and
even claimed the 100,000 were supporting Gov policy. The vast majority of
those 100,000 disappeared back to their centrally heated homes and offices
and have not been seen since, in case they might damage their job prospects
or for whatever reasons. The successes of the Shannon based protests have
been by individuals and small groups doing various non-violent actions, and
by the peace camps. I have been saying for a long time that the idea of the
peace camp should be maintained on a flexible periodic basis by encouraging
groups from around the country to set up temporary peace camps for weekends
whenever it suits them and when appropriate. Mid West groups and individuals
will assist.
yours in peace

I fear you can't count..where did you get the 100k marchers from? I was there and it looked very like 3-5k around Shannon..did you all walk in circles and count everybody 5 times?

100k out of 2.8M population is a poor turnout..never be elected on 3.5% of the poll and 5K is even worse.

100,000 looks like a reference to Feb 15 2003.

As with all these thangs you don't blame the people who turn up, blame the ones who don't if you're into the blame game!
