Money dries up for CIRA and their drug dealing/gun renting/ 'security' services

REPUBLICAN Sinn Fein has been designated a foreign terrorist organisation by US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Previously the Continuity IRA (CIRA) had been designated as a terror group under the US Immigration and Nationality Act, but Mr Powell has amended the designation to add RSF to a list of 38 foreign terrorist groups.

Under the new designation "aliases" of CIRA, including the Continuity Army Council and Republican Sinn Fein, have been newly branded foreign terrorist organisations.

The State Department views CIRA as having been "formed as the clandestine armed wing" of RSF.

Under US law this designation makes it illegal for persons in the US or subject to the US jurisdiction to provide material support for the group. It requires US financial institutions to block the group's assets and it provides a basis for the US to deny visas to representatives and members of the group.

According to a statement from the US State Department, since its inception CIRA "the US nited States remains fully committed to a peaceful settlement in Northern Ireland on the basis of the Good Friday Agreement and we continue working with the British and Irish governments as well as with all the parties to advance this goal

RSF's New York Branch, the National Irish Freedom Committee, gave an award in 2003 to anti-war axtivist Mary Kelly. NIFC is run by John McDonough, who also hosts WBai's Radio Free Eireann. It will be interesting to see if McDonough broadcasts some comments from RSF president, Ruairi O'Bradaigh. Surely interviewing someone can not be construed as 'material support'.?

Foreign Terrorist Organization; Designation

In the Matter of the Designation of Continuity Irish Republican
Army (CIRA), also known as Continuity Army Council, also known as
Republican Sinn Fein, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization pursuant to
section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

[[Page 42077]]

Based upon a review of the Administrative Record assembled in this
matter, and in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary
of the Treasury, the Secretary of State has concluded that there is a
sufficient factual basis to find that the relevant circumstances
described in section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as
amended (8 U.S.C. 1189, hereinafter ``INA''), exist with respect to
Continuity Irish Republican Army.
Therefore, effective July 13, 2004, the Secretary of State hereby
designates that organization as a foreign terrorist organization
pursuant to section 219(a) of the INA.

Cofer Black,
Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Department of State.

[Public Notice 4763]

Determination Pursuant to Executive Order 13224 Relating to
Continuity Irish Republican Army

In consultation with the Secretary of the Treasury, the Attorney
General, and the Secretary of Homeland Security, I have amended the
designation of Continuity Irish Republican Army pursuant to Executive
Order 13224 to add the following names as aliases: Continuity Army
Council; Republican Sinn Fein.
Consistent with the determination in section 10 of Executive Order
13224 that ``prior notice to persons determined to be subject to the
Order who might have a constitutional presence in the United States
would render ineffectual the blocking and other measures authorized in
the Order because of the ability to transfer funds instantaneously,''
no prior notice need be provided to any person subject to this
determination who might have a constitutional presence in the United
States, because to do so would render ineffectual the measures
authorized in the Order.

Dated: July 9, 2004.
Colin L. Powell,
Secretary of State, Department of State.

Has republican SF even come out to condem the Omagh Bombing?

author by neverwenttocollegepublication date Thu Jul 15, 2004 15:21author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Why just focus on Omagh? Why not ask about other bombings? For example, you could have asked who had (or better still - who had not) condemned such atrocities as the Dublin & Monaghan Bombings (which was the biggest mass murder in Ireland in recent times), and any of the other acts of slaughter.
I suspect you are just being a little selective.

Is this the only case of an Irish political party being declared to be "terrorist"?

Noted that in the last election those running on a republican sinn fein ticket appeared as non-party on ballot sheets. In one ward here in Limerick almost 50% of their vote transferred back to the provisionals! which meant that a lot of the voters weren't keeping up to date with "saoirse"
