Fenceline communities to The Hague and London shareholders meetings
‘Lessons not Learned - The Other Shell Report’ presented

Amsterdam, 21 June 2005 – On the 27th of June, the eve before Shell’s Annual General Meeting, Friends of the Earth Netherlands and fenceline communities impacted by Shell’s operations will launch a report entitled ‘Lessons not Learned – The other Shell Report 2004’. This alternative annual report highlights the destructive impact of Shell’s activities around the world.

The report reviews the past year and contains nine cases of the damage inflicted upon people and the environment by Shell’s activities in the Niger Delta (Nigeria), Durban (South Africa), Sao Paolo (Brazil), Sakhalin (Russian Federation), County Mayo (Ireland), Pandacan (Philipines), Curacao (Netherlands Antilles), Port Arthur (Texas, USA), and Norco (Louisiana, USA).

Representatives of these local communities (so-called fenceline communities) will be present at the launch of ‘The Other Shell Report’. They will give testimonies about the abuses Shell has inflicted on their home environments. Their anger and struggle for a better environment has brought them to the Netherlands to hold Shell’s Board of Directors accountable.

The following speakers will be present: Norbert George (Curaçao), Cesar Augusto Pereria (Brazil), Chito Adofina (Philippines), Asume Osuoka (Nigeria), Zakiya Kikia Khan (South Africa), Bobby Peek (South Africa) Maura Harrington (Ireland), Denny Larson (USA), Hilton Kelley (USA), Anne Rolfes (USA), Iris Carter (USA) and Nathalie Walker (USA). It will be possible to interview the delegates. Their biographies are enclosed in the attachment.

The shadow-report on the Dutch-British multinational will be simultaneously presented in The Hague and London. As in The Hague, community representatives and Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland will tell the ‘other story’ about Shell, by launching the report and attending the AGM.
