Get ready to support anti-G8 prisoners in Scotland

category international | summit mobilisations | news report author Wednesday June 22, 2005 14:12author by ABC Brighton, UK - ABC Brighton, UK Report this post to the editors

Get ready to support anti-G8 prisoners in Scotland

(Please distribute widely!)

The G8 summit will be held in Scotland from the 6th to the 8th July, and, of course, it will be resisted and protested against by a wide range of people, with demonstrations and actions planned from the 2nd to the 8th. That resistance is very likely to involve some people being arrested and imprisoned, and we feel it is important that we prepare for this before it happens, and act against it when it does. For this reason, we are calling for groups, individuals and movements to both prepare solidarity actions and get ready to support prisoners.

Supporting prisoners needs funds- perhaps a fund raising event could be organised? How about information events, letter writing groups?

Solidarity actions or demonstrations may need a little planning, so why not find out where British embassies, consulates, corporations etc. are based near you?

Of course, these are just a few suggestions, and it's up to everyone to imagine for themselves how they want to act in solidarity with any prisoners. But we feel that if our solidarity is to be real, effective, and immediate, then we all need to start making plans, and that sooner is better than later!

RBS men don't wear Plaid
http://paulmason.typepad.com/newsnig8t/2005/06/rbs_men_dont_we.html

Edinburgh police are advising workers to "dress down" during the week of the G8 to avoid getting into trouble with protesters, according to Personnel Today. Apparently Royal Bank of Scotland has advised its employees not to wear their blue tartan uniforms either...
[....]
Those going to Edinburgh have to be careful they don't dress down so much that the police begin to take an interest - after all, according to one purported police blog [*below] , they have their own formula for spotting troublemakers. However this is quite hard to do: when I worked in publishing, our ad managers would have special, awful jeans and sweatshirts to wear on "awaydays", always perfectly ironed, which always made them look, frankly, daft.

Big shout out to all the guys’n gals goin’ up to Gleneagles for the G8… RESPECT!
http://coppersblog.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_coppersblog_archive.html#111805219503799562

here’s Coppersblog’s guide for dealing with the protesters:
1. Indentify your protester using the (confusing, police-style) mnemonic below:
B-alding
P-ony tail
S-andals
O-xfam clothes
G-etting on a bit
A-cting like a twat
2. Remember, they may look confident, but they’re really nervous on the inside. If you’re not sure, just bluff the law (the mnemonic has finished now).
3. Take the little bars of soap and bottles of shampoo from the hotel and throw them at the protesters. They’ll love the irony.
4. Use the phrase “I’m only following orders.” As often as possible. This will have the effect of calming the protesters, like a beekeeper approaching a hive with his smoke generator (that’s what I call an analogy).
5. If anyone asks, say you’re from the Met, and all you know is that you’re there to protect George Bush.
6. Remember, they are struggling for justice while you are on time and a half for 16 hours a day. Many of you will be on rest day rate, many of them are on the dole. You are being put up in hotels while they will be sleeping in their own (not inconsiderable) filth. Take heart and think about your next payslip!
