EU Committee on Petitions decision (N6)

Section of planned new N6 Upgrade road between Ballinasloe and Galway City

"However, it is not expected that the construction of the project will be funded (by the European Union Regional Development Fund)."

Some people have asked to see the full text of the letter from the European Parliament Committee on Petitions relating to the planned new N6 Upgrade Road, which was designed to go through the Celtic heritage site in the Turoe / Knocknadala area of East County Galway (Republic of Ireland).

Scanned copies of the two separate texts, a letter dated July 6th 2005, and an attachment dated October 21st 2004, can now be viewed at the Internet address provided below.

There is a statement in the EU texts which reads: " ... it is not expected that the construction of the project will be funded (by the European Regional Development Fund)".

This may mean the new N6 Upgrade road will not now go through the Turoe / Knocknadala area as planned?

This EU statement about funding may also have very important implications for the protection of the Battle of Aughrim heritage site? - which is located approximately 5 miles to the west of Ballinasloe.

As some will already know, the Battle of Aughrim (July 12th 1691) is considered by many to be the bloodiest and most decisive battle in recorded Irish history. It is often referred to by reputable historians as "Ireland's Gettysburg", and it very firmly cleared up certain doubts regarding the Catholic / Protestant conflict which remained after the Battle of the Boyne a year earlier in July 1690.
