Green fingered republicans arrested

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Wednesday August 24, 2005 19:31author by Green Fingers - Ógra Shinn Féin Report this post to the editors

Two Republican activists have been arrested recently whilst painting a postbox green in Co. Tyrone.

Two Ógra Shinn Féin activists from the Tyrone area have been arrested recently for painting post-boxes the colour green in county Tyrone. It is understood it is a part of a campaign undertaken by the republican youth group, Ógra Shinn Féin, to paint post-boxes green instead of the ‘colonial red’.
It is understood that this campaign had originally been started in the early nineties and has recently been kick started again.
A spokesperson for Ógra said “We started this campaign a number of years ago whereby we would paint post-boxes green in prospect of Irish Unity and as a sign that the British writ does not run in the north of Ireland. It is a way in which we can assert our national identity in a matter of our choosing. At present there are upwards of 100 post-boxes painted green throughout the 6 counties. I would urge everyone who feels strongly about Irish freedom to get out and get active on the issue, this is a novelty way of contributed to the struggle for Irish freedom. At the end of the day we are saving An Post the job of painting the post-boxes green when Irish freedom is achieved."
