Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6i wish to commend the rescilience and patience of the parents of irish children who are kept away from their wives and children. I do not know the intensions of the government particularly the justice ministry concerning them but i feel it is wrong to put them in a limbo. i believe they should be integrated into the system, allowed to work, assist their families and contribute to the irish economy; the family is an important unit to be preserved and maintain and not destroy.
If these Nigerian men are claiming that it would be unsafe for them to be returned to Nigeria our UN-commended asylum-system is their proper recourse. If their claims have substance and credibility they will have a right to remain here, and co-incidentally, and subject to the mothers of the children concerned, a right to reside with those women and children. If their claims are bogus, they have no claim to reside here as refugees.
Neither is there any right to 'family-reunification' in the country of choice. In this respect these Nigerians are in exactly the same position where any family (marital, or non-marital) with partners from different countries separate and one party wishes to return home. Tough decisions have to be made. In the case of these Nigerians, the situation is similar. The women concerned will in each case have to decide which is more important - 'family reunification' or the benefits for themselves and their child of Irish residency.
The Irish people in a recent referendum have made their opinions abundantly clear. No more Irish baby scams.
Unless they establish a claim to refugee status, these men should have the basic decency to stop abusing our laws and go home before they cost the Irish taxpayer even more money by having to remove them.
This government will pay a heavy political price if it ignores the will of the people in this matter.
The Irish arrived in Nigeria over a century ago and the Irish influence in education and sports in Nigeria has been tremendous to say the least. Many of Nigeria’s elite, both male and female, in all fields of endeavour, are products of Irish missionary teachers in the network of first-class Catholic secondary schools across Nigeria. These schools have always had a tradition of combining academic and sports excellence. So it is no surprise that some of Nigeria’s greatest sportsmen in many disciplines from football to tennis and cricket, have also been nurtured by these same Irish missionary teachers. In addition, some of these Irish missionary teachers like the late Rev. Father Slattery, made great contributions to football development in Nigeria. I went to a catholic school in Ibadan, Nigeria called St Patricks College. Irish missionaries taught us a lot about Ireland and so Nigerians have come to see this country as Eldorado. In fact when I was growing up I thought Ireland was where God lived and that these white Irish missionaries were Angels sent by God to come and teach us about the Bible. Nigerian are not here to abuse the system. If Ireland has become attractive to Nigerian today it is because of the long history of ties that had existed from times past.
Has the government looked at the potential hazards that will result from the separation of wives from their husbands? Some of these women will become predators to their conterparts husbands. For those that decide to stay celibate, depression is bound to set in, they tend to become hostile to their children whom should actually be at the focal point of this whole issue.
Come to think of it, statistics show that a greater percentage of the non-national mother's of irish born citizens that were granted residency cannot work. This is because the incidental cost of working, cost of child care, rent etc will probably transciend their income hence their continued stay on wlefare payment. In effect, the government is worse off by restricting Irish born fathers from re-uniting with their families.
There is no greater joy a child can get than to be in the presence of his parents. Mothers play most part in the physical care of the child but fathers has a tremendous role they play in the psychic of the child. The child sees his father as a role model. It will be very unwise for the government itself to be seen as a proponents of such unGodly laws that restricts husbands from their wives.
We have seen a lot of abuse of the system by people who were wise in the ways of our very flawed system. Other EU governments were only to happy to leave them move on to Ireland, which is against EU law. How did people arrive in Ireland from countries with no direct air or sea links. The why is simple but the HOW has never been fully explored. We are finally now putting a stop to the abuse the people of Ireland have taken off people who are here to take money off us and never give anything back.
Some of the irish citizens are viewing this issue from the wrong side. YES, some of us have abused the system while some havent. The bone of contention here is granting the men whose wives and kids are already residing in Ireland legal residency.
How easy is it for a woman with 2 or 3 kids to bear the brunt alone? Most of us are here to contribute to the irish economy positively and not negatively.
Granting the fathers legay stay will be a step towards the non nationales achieving this aim.
The government should please consider our pleas and grant the fathers of irish born children the right to reside in Ireland
Yes the government has been so good to us and we appreciate their kindness!!!
