Reform is favourite to win the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning Labour's 14,700 majority. Why? It might have something to do with having the nation's third-highest number of asylum seekers, says Steven Tucker.

Protest against Maria Eagle visit

Stop the education cuts

Education Minister Maria Eagle found herself on the receiving end of a protest against education cuts when she visited Good Shepherd PS in Poleglass on 20 June.

The protest was in response to savage attacks on education services in the South Eastern Education and Library Board (Co Down) area. The cuts will hit all parts of education but the most brutal are aimed directly at special needs children and classroom workers.

Although the visit was shrouded in secrecy news leaked out at the last minute and protest organisers where able to quickly assemble 40 angry workers and parents who made their presence felt. This protest is the latest in a series which have taken place across the South Eastern Education Board area in responce to the governments campaign to slash education spending.

A show down between the government appointed Education Board and workers is expected at the next meeting of the Board on 6th July when the government will again try to implement the cuts package.

This Government never ceases to amaze me. Ms Eagle comes on TV and has the nerve, cheek and bare faced affrontary to talk about disadvantaged children, and how this Government are doing what they can to help them get a better start in life!! while we all know that as the friendly face on the TV talks a good game, the real face of the Government callously imposes devatsating Education cuts. Cuts that will destroy the oppertunities of a whole generation of young people. These are the very people who deserve a helping hand, Ms Eagle is giving them a slap across the face.

Congrats on the demo. Stick it to them. But what is the CYWU?

Was on the protest, and the purpose was regarding the announcement of cash by Maria Eagle, that has been already announced at least once befor under "Children and Young People".
Maria needs to get the Education house in order, and that means Senior Civil servants and Board Senior Managers, by giving our children the funds they deserve, instead of allowing them to concoct and conduct cuts packages
Whilst Education burns, Maria takes up the mantle of Barry and Angela, and fails to resolve the real issues. Funding is a major issue in the five Boards. Can five Boards have got it so wrong?
School numbers are falling, and less numbers means less money to go around. Schools still cost the same, or more. Heating, lighting, staff, these things cost money, but for every child less in a school, there is approx £2000 less in cash.
